When “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers starts playing, many of us have an image pop into our heads. That image, for most of us, is Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore “making a clay pot” together in the movie Ghost. With such a famous scene, the song has become synonymous with the movie.
Has the song ever found success in anything besides Ghost?
Well, indeed it has!
In the town of Bremen, Germany several different orchestras all come together to play a combined cover of the song. Needless to say, it’s very moving and they do a fantastic job, and each individual orchestra as well as the various band members of each get their moment in the limelight.
Check out the reason this version is so special.
If you like people in uniform, then this is the video for you!
With the trumpeter starting us off with an awesome solo, we get into it! Soon, the other musicians join in and we get to see something that we can expect – the seriousness that this orchestra has! I guess that makes sense, they are military. Just check out that keyboardist’s face!
And when the tubas come in, they lend their gravitas.
Technically, it’s not even a tuba, it’s a sousaphone. That doesn’t really matter because what DOES matter is the fact that it brings a whole new bassy element to the song! It’s incredible.
Another “serious” player…
This drummer boy is doing his own purum-pum-pum-pum, but seems to be taking the matter very seriously indeed. Maybe this is like a drill, and anyone who messes up will be subject to intense discipline. Perhaps this is the face of a man hoping to avoid having to do 50 push ups and running 100 yards?
A bit of clarinet adds a delicate touch.
When the rest of the orchestra joins in, we hear the soft timbre of the clarinet. It’s subtle but adds to the rich complexity of the entire performance. If the Righteous Brothers saw this, they would HAVE to love it, right?
And when you see all the orchestras all lined up…wow!
With so many people filled into one room, the moment is pretty stunning. Imagine how long it takes them to march in there all single-file!
Now just WAIT until those French horns come in – its amazing.
Also, the award for “man with the coolest uniform” goes to the French horn guy. He gets extra points for the nut-cracker vibes he is putting off. I respect it.
It’s truly an amazing thing to see so many people performing together.
While we don’t know exactly how many people are here, it’s a huge number. Everyone brings their own style and talent to the performance and it’s truly amazing.
