Opera has been around for hundreds of years, and itโs still popular today. Its booming baritones, trilling sonatas, and visually stunning sets and costumes set the stage for something truly unforgettable. Itโs no wonder that people still come in droves to watch the drama unfold.
But, obviously, audiences arenโt there just to watch the dazzling stage.
They are there to listen to the angelic voices of the opera singers.
When we think of an opera singer, we often envision a booming voice that is so resonant that it can carry itself across the ocean.
But younger generations donโt seem impressed.
They arenโt going to the theater to watch the opera anymore. Is there any way to bring them back?
Well, there is one thing that appeals to people everywhere, no matter what generation they belong to. And thatโs humor. Perhaps if there were more humorous moments incorporated into the opera, younger people may be more interested in going to watch it?
With that in mind, what could be funnier than someone singing after theyโve sucked down some good olโ helium?
In a video thatโs amassed over 4 million views, a group of professional opera singers decided to do just that! The opera singers had their own little show backstage when they came across some balloons that were filled with helium.
It was Christina Elizabeth, a professional singer with an incredible voice, who decided to have some fun with the balloons.
Christina has been a professional opera singer for most of her adult life and sheโs performed a variety of fantastic songs. But, by far, her rendition of โDeh Vieni Non Tardarโ (or โCome and Donโt Delayโ) is her most popular performance. And this is the song she decides to sing.
Her friends gather around to watch the spectacle unfold. Then, Christina takes a deep pull of the balloon.
The hilarious video all began after a welcome party, hosted by the Incorporated Society of Musicians โ or ISM. When Christina and her friends were cleaning up after the event, they noticed that there were some balloons left over.
โAfter the ISM welcome party, what better to do than use the helium from the **surplus amount of left over balloons to breathe in and sing an aria?!? Hope you enjoy a modern rendition of โDeh Vieni Non Tardarโ from Le Nozze Di Figaro!โ Christina wrote.
And when she starts singing, hilarity ensues.
Christina takes a deep breath of helium from one of the red balloons, then she lets loose. But, instead of that mighty voice of hers that everyone is used to, she sings like a tiny mouse! A few verses in, you can hear the effects of the helium begin to wear off.
But when her usual singing voice starts taking over, she takes another hit from the balloon.
After another pull, she continues the song. Everyone starts to giggle because she sounds exactly like Alvin and the Chipmunks! In fact, itโs as if the Chipmunks performed their very own rendition of the classic opera song.
Christina sucks the last bit of helium from the balloon and hits a note so high and squeaky that everyone erupts with laughter!
With the notes that Christina can hit effortlessly and a little help from a helium balloon, she gives a unique performance thatโs unlike anything anyone has ever heard before. โOh, my voice is back to normal,โ she quips when the helium has completely worn off.
Maybe this hilarious performance is just the thing to bring younger people back to the opera?
Everyone who saw the video loved Christinaโs squeaky singing voice โ and itโs not hard to see why. Although opera singers are a bit of an enigma to Americans, this is a hilarious way to listen to it!
