This Thanksgiving holiday is a little more joyous in Billings, Montana, as local police officers are surprising residents by issuing turkeys, not tickets, this holiday season.

Recently, drivers who were pulled over for minor traffic violations, such as going a few miles over the speed limit, were stopped by members of the Billings Police Department’s traffic enforcement team and were given frozen turkeys for their Thanksgiving meal.

Officers made sure to do their due diligence prior to handing out the frozen birds, by ensuring driver’s records were clean and there were no outstanding warrants.

One recipient, Larry Riddle, who was pulled over for not signaling while turning, was highly appreciative of the unexpected gift. Since his wife has passed away from cancer, he now lives on a limited budget as a single parent. Riddle stated that this turkey would allow him to cook a special Thanksgiving meal for his daughter, making the holiday that much more delightful.

The deed was prompted by an act of a local businessman, who donated twenty turkeys to the Billings Police Department, in hopes they would be able to deliver the turkeys to local families in need. And while this man chooses to remain anonymous, his actions have had a significant impact on local community members this holiday season.

The Department’s Lieutenant, Neil Lawrence, stated, that this was the first time the officers have done this and were fulfilled by the positive feedback, reporting, “The individuals that received the warnings and the turkeys have been very happy.” He continued, “Our Facebook page has received a lot of positive comments regarding it. So far its been a very positive thing for the community.”

This act demonstrates the meaningful effects of consideration, compassion, and giving. Small, positive gestures of kindness are truly powerful and can create a positive feedback loop.

We are all going through different walks of life, and it is of the utmost importance that we think beyond ourselves and consider ways we can help others, especially over the holiday season.

Please SHARE this generous and gratifying gesture with your friends and family.
