Amid the news after news of turbulent times around us, there are still some stories that inspire the best in humanity.
A deputy in Nash County put on a new meaning for going the extra mile by helping out a stranger who traveled 12 miles back and forth. Jaylesya Corbett covered this distance daily without a bike or a car. She was doing it on foot – rain or shine, hail or snow, “high sun” to “high moon”.
Sgt. Scott Bass recalls seeing Corbett on the side of the road, walking alone and enduring the elements.
He noticed her dress and realized she was working at Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits. After that, Bass started offering Corbett a ride.
He explained that the distance that Corbett covered by foot was not easy, most especially since she had to stand behind the counter for another 8 to 9 hours.
Bass also told other squad members to give Corbett a ride if they happen to see her going to her shift or walking back home after a long day’s work.
The officer, staying true to the ethos of serving the community, didn’t stop there. He knew that he and his team couldn’t keep on giving Corbett rides as they were needed to be in other places in the community as well.
To further help Corbett, Bass reached out to the local Walmart store and spoke with the store manager.
He explained that a member of their community would benefit from a bike so she could go to work faster and safer. Bass said that this could reduce Corbett’s travel time by half and she could use that time to rest before going to work and after reaching home.
After his trip to Walmart, Bass visited Corbett to deliver the surprise. At first, Corbett was caught off guard. She thought she did something wrong. But when Bass rolled in her new bike, Corbett was ecstatic.
Even though she didn’t know how to ride a bike, Corbett shared that she was determined to learn nonetheless.
She may fall and wobble a bit, but she will never take things for granted.
And this philosophy is what defined her. When asked why she was willing to endure 12 miles of walking just to go to work, Corbett shared that if someone wants to work, they’ll find a way to get to it.
“God gave us legs. That’s one way to travel.” She shared with CBS.
But those legs were finally given the break they deserve.
Talk show host Steve Harvey invited this determined worker and the big-hearted officer to his show. After sharing their story once more, Corbett was treated to a surprise – a brand new car that she could use to drive to work.
Bass shook Harvey’s hand and thanked him for the gift but Harvey insisted that it was all thanks to Bass. If he did not go out of his way to help a citizen in need, the story would not have ended as it did.
This story has proved that determination can get you far, but helping each other out can help us get farther and stronger.
