Most 13-year-olds with an X-Box aren’t aware of what’s going on around them. But one teenage boy from Fernley, Nevada saw his mom was struggling and decided he needed to help.
Being a single mom can’t be easy and while parents rarely mean to put their burdens onto their children, many kids know when something is up. William Rabillo is one of those kids and while he didn’t do it for the attention, he’s inadvertently warming hearts everywhere with his act of kindness and self-sacrifice.
Rabillo’s mother Krystal June Preston said in a Facebook post that the family had recently fallen on hard times:
“The last couple weeks have literally been hell filled with so many tears, anger, confusion, and heartache.”
While the details are private to the family, one of the struggles she faced was being without a car to get herself to work or take her 3 kids where they needed to go.
After seeing a video on YouTube in which someone gifted their mother with a car, Rabillo set out to do the same.
He was already doing chores for neighbors to earn some extra cash but decided to step up his efforts once he had a much bigger goal in mind. In her post, his mom called him “a lawn mowing, yard cleaning, money making machine.”
He found a woman on Facebook selling a white 1999 Chevy Metro and reached out to her to offer a trade – his X-Box and some yard work for her car.
He told ABC 8, that at first, she declined:
“It was really cheap so I asked her if I could trade it or earn it, and at first she said no. After she thought about it, then she said yes.”
After making the deal a reality, the young man told his mother he bought her a car. According to Preston:
“William came home and said, ‘Mom I bought you a car.’ I of course laughed and told him, ‘Ya right!’”
Once Preston realized the truth, she was overcome with emotion:
“I completely lost it. I started balling my eyes out. I am speechless my 13 year old son bought me a car. He did some work for this women and that was his payment that he worked out with her. And here I thought it was a joke… Nope I was handed the keys and paperwork to the car and I’m freaking out but so in shock.”
Thousands of people have now liked or shared the Facebook post with the teen proudly standing in front of the car, but the notoriety wasn’t the point:
“I didn’t really want that to happen,” he told ABC 8. “I just wanted to do it, that’s all.”
And this story isn’t just heartwarming, it’s more complex than anyone could have imagined. A few days after the surprise, Preston set up a GoFundMe page explaining that William does all of his good deeds despite some disabilities.
She explained:
“He was born with a severe case of bilateral clubfoot. So from a week old William had surgeries and casting in both legs for years. He never once couldn’t do something he set his mind to. Learned to walk with a cast on and everything.
William also has ADHD and it’s been a struggle for him so a couple years… “
The story has reached so many people that the family’s $5,000 goal was met and exceeded within 3 days. 150 donors made donations large and small to help the family out.
Preston added on Facebook how proud she was of her son:
“He is such a good kid. He may have his days but OMG what 13 year old kid do you know that buys his mom a car… William I love you son and thank you. You have such a big heart and I love you…”
