Many of us probably grew up watching Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. The show started all the way back in 1963 as Mister Rogers on CBC Television. It was eventually picked up by PBS in 2001 and became a fixture of American childhood as well. The show was named after Fred Rogers, the show’s host who died in 2003. Rogers was such a well-loved figure that Hollywood recently announced that it would be making a film of his life.
And you’ll never guess who they cast to play Mr. Rogers.
The internet is rejoicing because Tom Hanks, Hollywood’s quintessential dad and the world’s nicest guy, has been cast in the role!
The film is tentatively titled You Are My Friend and is set to be directed by director Marielle Heller. Tristar Pictures recently sent out a press release with a basic outline of what we can expect from the movie:
“You Are My Friend is inspired by a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod. In the heart-warming story, a cynical journalist begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write a profile piece on the beloved icon and finds his perspective on life transformed.
This is the perfect alchemy of talent coming together at the perfect time to remind us all of the transformative power of kindness and respect to heal and to unite. We are proud to partner with Marielle, Tom and everyone at Big Beach to bring this inspirational true story to audiences all over the world,” said Hannah Minghella, President of TriStar Pictures.”
For those who watched the show, Hanks’ casting seems to capture the genial spirit of Mr. Rogers almost perfectly. In addition to seeing Mr. Rogers back on the screen, the movie sounds like it will take a unique approach to covering his life story as well! As the world has become more and more politically divided, many of us who grew up with shows like Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood may be nostalgic for a simpler time. Hopefully, this new movie will remind the world of Fred Rogers’ kind spirit and introduce his work to an entirely new generation. Everyone is hoping for Hanks to knock the role out of the park—and many major news outlets have commented that he is a near perfect choice for the role.
A photo of Tom in costume began circulating last September.
Now, however, we’ve been treated to additional photos of him in the role! In the first photo, we see Tom in the quintessential Mr. Rogers move: the signature show swap! This is how Rogers kicked off every episode of his show, singing the iconic theme song.
In the second photo, Hanks is shaking the hand of actor Matthew Rhys, who plays journalist Tom Junod in the film. According to reports, Junod is a bit of a cynic— however, we have our hunches that Hanks’ Mr. Rogers will win him over in the end!
There is not yet an official release date for the film or trailer— but the film is an inspiring reminder of Rogers’ legacy in the wake of what would have been his 91st birthday on March 20, 2019.
