The unconditional love parents have for their children is undeniable – and this mother truly demonstrates that, fulfilling a meaningful promise and acting as a surrogate for her daughter.

At just 14 years old, Maddie Coleman was diagnosed with a medical disorder, with doctors telling her the unfortunate news that she would not be able to carry children of her own one day.

In the wake of learning this news, Megan Barker, Maddie’s mother, told her daughter, “When you get older and want a child, I’ll carry your baby.”

As a teen, Maddie recalls feeling that her mother’s offer was “weird,” but now at 25 years old, Maddie understands the seriousness of her condition and knew her choices were very limited. Just last year, doctors found a tumor on Maddie’s ovaries.

And while the tumors have since been removed, it was definitely a signifier that Maddie was in no condition to bear children. Therefore, in an effort to expand her family, Maddie decided to take her mother up on her offer to carry her child.

“At first, I couldn’t wrap my mind around the idea of mom carrying our baby,” Maddie admitted, “It was a bit weird, but I was mostly excited and so grateful but it took a minute for me to understand.”

After successfully carrying Gus, now Megan is going to do it again, and carry her daughter’s child for the second time.

Maddie addressed that fact that she is choosing to conceive through this approach again, stating, “We thought about Gus growing up by himself conceived the way he was, and him wondering why his parents wanted him conceived this way. I feel like being able to relate to someone so close to him will be great as far as a sibling goes.”

Coming this January, Megan will begin the suggogacy process, expecting to give birth to her second grandchild next fall. And while she will be turning 50 this year, she states, “It’s not a concern to me. I’ve already done it once and the pregnancy was fantastic. I felt good.”

Little Gus and the rest of Maddie’s family are very excited about their new addition.
