Drunk driving caused almost 40,000 deaths in America in 2017. This is no laughing matter. But one woman, whose child killed someone while driving drunk, couldn’t control her amusement at court.
Donna Kosal looks just like any other woman.
No one who passed her on the street would think that she was a person who would celebrate their daughter’s fatal recklessness.
But that’s exactly what she did.
On 23rd June 2016, 25-year-old Amanda Kosal was drunk driving in Redford Township.
This is on the western border of Detroit, Michigan.
Her reckless driving would have terrible consequences.
She veered over the centerline of the road, slamming head-on into an SUV.
This crash killed 31-year-old Jerome Zirker. And his fiance, Brittany Johnson, was severely injured but luckily managed to survive.
Amanda was almost entirely unharmed.
When police arrived on the scene, Amanda admitted to being very intoxicated. They took her to jail.
Shortly after this, Amanda, her mother, and her other family members arrived at court for her initial hearing.
Jerome Zirker’s grieving family also came into the courthouse. Anyone could see that they were devastated at their sudden, senseless loss. But Kosal’s family didn’t care.
The Kosal family members were disrespectful throughout the hearing, repeatedly making comments and appearing to enjoy themselves.
Meanwhile, the Zirker family was feeling worse and worse.
Jerome Zirker’s sister started reading a statement on the loss of her brother. That’s when Donna Kosal and her son did something to shock everyone present.
They started laughing loudly.
The judge had had enough. She ordered the Dosal son to leave the courthouse and expressed her disgust at Donna and her family.
“Whoever can sit here at a tragic moment like this and laugh and smile when somebody has lost a family member… The entire time that Mr. Zirker’s sister was speaking, that clown was sitting there smiling and laughing.” – Judge
Then Donna got up and tried to leave, annoyed at the judge’s words.
“Yeah, you can go too. Because if you don’t know how to act, you can go to jail.” – Judge
The judge then sentenced the mother to 93 days in jail for her disrespect.
But Donna wasn’t done yet.
After the police had arrested her, they brought Donna back through the courthouse to bring her to jail.
As she was taken through, she said to the judge:
“Why don’t you shut your mouth?” – Donna Kosal
But the next morning, Donna had a very different attitude.
She appeared back in the same courtroom, wearing prison scrubs. Now she was crying, begging to be released.
Shockingly, the judge complied and commuted the sentence.
Donna Kosal, who had behaved disgustingly to the family of the man her daughter had killed, walked free.
In 2018, Amanda Kosal herself was eventually sentenced to 3 to 15 years in prison for the manslaughter of Jerome Kirker. But she’ll probably be out sooner.
Jerome Kirker will never be able to do anything again. As well as being engaged, he was the father of five kids.
Stories like this show that there are many terrible people in the world.
The only good news to come from this story is that, on the whole, drunk driving fatalities are becoming less frequent in America.
In the last 35 years, drunk driving caused deaths have decreased by 48%.
But this story shows that any drunk driving death is a pointless tragedy and that those who commit it are disgusting.
