Being a parent means putting your children first, no matter what it takes. When this mother was confronted with a difficult situation, she felt completely crushed. But when she realized her children needed her to be strong, she rose to the occasion.
Sara Chivers is a wife and mother of two young sons. Her boys are Hugh, who is 3 years old, and Alfie, who is only 18 years old. These two are Sara’s greatest joys. When life threw a curve ball her way, she knew she had to be strong for them.
Sara is 34 years old. When she was 25, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. The young woman was horrified, but she never let the illness stop her. After her diagnosis she married her husband, Leigh, and decided to start a family with him. Sara took control of her life, and she didn’t let anything stand in her way.
In 2008, Sara beat her brain cancer. The victory allowed her to follow her dreams of raising a family. All seemed well for this strong survivor, but there was more bad news on the way.
This past March, Sara’s cancer returned via three tumors. She was told that the illness was terminal – she would never get to see her sons reach adulthood. Sara was devastated. The news was enough to make her want to throw in the towel, until something else happened.
While Sara was in treatment for her brain tumor, she and her husband learned that Alfie had brain cancer. Though the doctors did not believe the cancer had been passed genetically, that news was hardly comforting to the distraught parents.
“We were in a state of disbelief,” Sara told People. “It wasn’t even on the scale of our worst fears; it was an inconceivable situation.”
Though the news was crushing, it gave Sara the push she needed to get back on her feet and be strong for her boys. “Alfie’s diagnosis has given me a new purpose,” Sara explained to ABC. “Instead of sitting idle, I’ll be using all of my might and willpower to give Alfie a voice. He needs me to champion his cause to give hope where there is hopelessness.”
Sara is doing everything she can do be a mother to her sons for as long as possible, but she knows the illness will take her eventually. “The question isn’t whether I will die from the disease, it’s when,” she shared with ABC. With that in mind, this mother wrote a touching letter for her sons to read when she is gone.
In the letter, Sara told her boys how hard it was to face the fact that she would not see them grow up. She let them know that they would “have to hear from others the little things” that made up who she was, but she told them a few of her passions. “Heartbroken doesn’t come close to describing the pain I feel at not being in your lives in the future,” Sara writes to her sons, “but I would never change or forego the time we have spent together and the immense joy you have brought me. You are without a doubt my proudest accomplishments.”
The people of the world have banded together to show this mother support. If you would like to help her cause, you can contribute to her GoFundMe page.
Sara is in a scary situation, but her bravery and dedication to her sons is inspiring. It is important to remember the power of love, especially when hope seems sparce.
