True beauty exists on the inside. It is also true, however, that a person might be treated differently based on how he or she looks. One woman faced the cruelty of othersโ comments every single day. She dreamed of a reality in which she could live free from stares and harsh whispers. This video of her unbelievable transformation, which required extensive tumor surgery, is graphic and may not be suitable for children, but itโs inspiring message is sure to pull on your heartstrings.
Libby Huffer suffered from a genetic disorder called neurofibrosis type 1. This condition causes many hard growths to form on the surface of the body. These tumors are not cancerous, but they do cause the patient a lot of pain.
Since Libbyโs tumors covered her face and body, she often felt vulnerable to the mean comments of others who passed her on the street. Libbyโs dream was to wake up in a world where she did not feel like a โcircus freak.โ
โI canโt even go for groceries without someone saying, โWhatโs that all over you?โโ Libby explained to on the show, The Doctors. โSomeday, it would be wonderful not to have to worry about how I look, or what clothes will hide my bumps.โ
The surgeons, Dr. Andrew Ordon and Dr. Ritu Chopra, were moved by Libbyโs story and decided to help her. They offered her an expensive medical procedure that would remove hundreds of tumors at once. They even waved the cost of the multiphase surgery, completing the transformation with a total makeover.
Libby was extremely grateful for the opportunity these doctors were giving her. Her daughter, Lindsey, was thrilled when she learned that her mother would be treated. She had always thought of her mother as beautiful, and she was hurt that the world didnโt see her in the same light.
โItโs the most frustrating thing watching your mom cut herself down constantly when you look at her like the most perfect person in the whole entire world, shared Lindsey.
When Libby finally emerged on the stage of The Doctors, no one could believe her awe-inspiring transformation. After seeing her daughterโs powerful reaction, there was not a dry eye in the audience.
โShe looks beautiful,โ Lindsey said as she struggled to fight back her tears. โI mean we still canโt believe weโre here, and that this even happened, but now finally you guys can see what Iโve seen for years.โ
Libbyโs transformation was extraordinary, but what made the moment even more special was seeing how her daughter appreciated her beauty, inside and out.
Libbyโs story is proof that our love is our most beautiful characteristic.
