It’s that time of year; your kids are headed back to school and ready to bring home the germs.
Everyone knows that kids get sick and can take the whole family down around this time.
What many people don’t realize, though, is that you can help your kids kick their cold for pennies on the dollar.
Over-the-counter medications are not only expensive, but very few are both safe and effective to use on your kids. Cut cost out of the situation altogether with this amazing essential oil decongestant bath-hack.
Many people aren’t aware that they have a virtual treasure-chest in terms of medicine growing right in their backyard.
Fortunately, Brianna Whedbee isn’t one of them.
This amazing mom knows the value of natural medicine, and she’s sharing her knowledge with the world. When her poor kiddo got sick earlier this year, she decided something needed to be done about it.
First, she started with some very powerful essential oils; eucalyptus and peppermint.
Certain plants have been known for hundreds (some of them for thousands) of years for their health benefits, and many common drugs we see in the stores today were discovered through plant-medicine. Aspirin’s anti-inflammatory properties, for instance, were first derived from the bark of Willow trees.
According to Healthline, eucalyptus oil can soothe many cold and flu symptoms, such as joint pain, congestion, and severe coughs. A property in the oil helps to loosen mucus, allowing you to breathe easier.
Peppermint is also known to carry many of the same benefits, making it a perfect compliment to eucalyptus…but how, you might ask?
The steam carries the beneficial compounds of the plant upward to a cold tube where the steam will recondense, making a more concentrated version of the medicine.
Essential oils are a fantastic alternative to OTC medicines, as only a few drops are required to gain a medicinal effect, and many of them are safe to use on babies and toddlers (just do your research first and consult the Doc if you’ve got any concerns).
In her Facebook post, Whedbee claims it is the combined effect of these two powerhouse essential oils that serve as the active ingredient in her decongestion bath, with a few added soothing herbs to really get the snot running.
After running a bath with water as hot as her tiny tot could stand, she added “a little more than a few drops” of each essential oil (think 4-5 drops each), and closed the bathroom door to trap in the steam.
Much like when essential oils are produced, the steam carries the volatile compounds upwards, allowing your little one to inhale all those wonderful benefits.
“less than a handful of each. I kind of just sprinkled it in.”
Then all that was left to do was watch it work…and boy, did it work!

Granted, this photo may be grossing you out like no other, but it’s also proof-positive that Whedbee’s essential oil decongestant bath hack is the REAL DEAL!
Beating your kid’s cold doesn’t have to break your budget anymore.
Just be sure to always dilute essential oils when using them on kids and people with sensitive skin, as the concentrated oil can irritate skin if not properly used.
Stay healthy folks!
