There are plenty of people who dream of appearing on the TODAY show’s Ambush Makeover segment. But this time around, it was two moms that were selected from the crowd to receive miracle transformations.
When hairstylist to the stars, Louis Licari, and fashion expert, Jill Martin, looked into the sea of fans with signs – to them the choice was easy.
The first pick of the day was 58-year-old Lenise Melton. She was there with her friend Sheryl who had a poster that stated, “Ambush Needed,” with a big arrow pointing to the mother-of-two.
Lenise is from Charlotte, North Carolina where she works as an accountant in financial aid. Now, that might not sound like the most “glamorous” career – but Sheryl still thought her friend of 52 years could spice up her look.
A lot of people go through times in their lives where maybe they’re not putting in as much effort into their appearance as they’d like. For Lenise, she was keeping it pretty simple.
The mom was wearing a t-shirt, slacks, and had her long hair pulled into ponytails. When asked to describe her style she had only a one-word response: missing.
Sheryl explained why she wanted her friend to get a makeover, saying:
“I just wanted her to radiate with the beauty she deserves.”
Lenise was whisked away by the Glam Squad for her makeover. Now, let’s meet the other mom that was selected to be transformed.
Bonnie Amend is a library clerk from New York who had a special day ahead of her. It was almost her 60th birthday!
Her family took her on a celebratory trip to the city, which included a stop at the TODAY plaza. For Bonnie, appearing on the segment would be a dream come true (and also a check on her bucket list).
The mom may have been chosen because she wasn’t very “glammed up.” She was wearing a floral shirt, no makeup, and had her gray hair flying wild.
Bonnie seemed like the perfect candidate for the show! Even her daughter was really excited that she had been selected – hoping she’d ditch the gray hair.
She told Jill,
“It’s my mom’s 6oth birthday, we’re celebrating it with all of us here in New York, and we just want my mom to get like a fresh start.”
It was time for the Glam Squad to work their magic.
The most thrilling part of this segment is watching the reveals. Will the person go from frumpy to fabulous? What will their families think of their new looks?
Kathie Lee and Hoda sit on stage with their helpers to introduce the world to the transformed guests. What kicks it all up a notch is that the families are blindfolded until after the person emerges.
Sometimes their reactions are priceless, just like the ones captured for Lenise and Bonnie. Another fun aspect is that the ladies don’t know what they look like either until they’re on stage.
What these moms discover is that not only do they look unrecognizable – they look absolutely stunning!
All of us parents deserve to be treated like kings and queens every once in a while. This is exactly the kind of royal treatment Lenise and Bonnie were given, and boy oh boy, do they look like hot mamas!
