Jeni Cox would put many other cheapskates and thrifty spenders to shame.

Penny pincher Jeni on TLC’s Extreme Cheapskate uses her pool to wash all their clothes. By all, that includes her kids’ clothing.

Cox really hates spending so much of her money that’s why she washes her kids’ clothes in the pool. And this penny pincher works out at a local sports shop. After all, gym memberships are expensive.

Here’s where it gets confusing. She lives in a big house with her kids.

But when asked, Cox makes perfect sense of it. In her own way of course.

“I hate spending money on things I can’t see the next day if it’s gone,” she explains.

“I’ve always been really cheap, I just get a good feeling out of not spending a lot of money but still accomplishing whatever goal I have.”

Her kids feel like they’re in 1812 apparently.

Sure, it doesn’t make sense cutting costs on laundry while living in a house with a pool, but none of us have her mindset. It’s not just laundry she cuts costs on either.

Jeni does have a car so she shares how she only puts around three liters of gas when she fills up. This forces her to limit where she goes. And with fuel prices always going up, she may have a point.

“Gas is kind of like makeup, less is more. When you buy less, you use less and you save more,” she explains.

Those three liters of gas does take her to a local sports store where she uses the display machines for a 45 minute work out. Whether that’s brilliant or not is up to anyone’s judgement.

“Going to a gym paying for a membership, that’s like $75 a month, it doesn’t cost me a dime to work out in that sporting goods store,” Jeni adds.

There’s more.

When Jeni gets back home, she saves money around the house with many other tricks that she reveals.

Jeni puts bricks inside her toilet cistern. This allows her to use 1,300 litres less water each month. That cuts her bill in half.

Her backyard pool is filled with containers of sand to reduce the size.

“It’s very expensive to try and maintain this pool and I’ve done a lot of research of ways to try and save money on it,” she says.

“I still keep the pool because I’ve got three kids and we don’t go on a lot of expensive vacations so I figure that’s kind of like a vacation.

One way to save money on this pool is to reduce the size of the pool. Just like putting a brick in the toilet.”

She uses baking soda to clean her pool. Bubble wrap covers the same pool her kids swim in. On the other end are the clothes she’s dumped in the water. And her kids do help her.
