When we think of moms, we often don’t think of someone who can dance. Once a woman becomes a parent, her late nights on the dance floor fade away for mornings with the baby. She loses a bit of that rebellious spirit and becomes more family-oriented, but she retains a piece of her independence.
Most kids don’t think their parents are cool. They believe that they make lame decisions for the sake of it, that they get some strange joy from ruining all the fun. The truth, however, couldn’t be more different.
Our parents are always looking out for our best interests, but they haven’t forgotten how to have fun. They keep their talents and their passions, and they pursue them when we are not around. They stay themselves, even though they are our parents.
Noelle Miner didn’t think of her mom much differently than any other teen. She was a parent, boring at best. There was nothing impressive she could do, right? Noelle was about to learn how wrong this idea was.
One day Noelle and her mom attended a dance convention. The two women were both passionate about dance, and they decided to get some quality bonding time out of the day. At one of the interactive events an instructor asked for dancers from the crowd to volunteer.
A mixed group of people headed to center stage, and Noelle’s mom was among them. Individuals of all ages headed to the dance floor to strut their stuff. They all had different levels of talent and experience, but they all loved to dance.
As Noelle’s mom headed to the stage, the girl took out her phone to start recording. “Let’s see if my mom’s any good,” she said to someone sitting next to her. She started recording for the memory, but she couldn’t have guessed what she would learn next.
The instructor started off easy, leading a simple routine for the volunteers to follow. Noelle’s mom did an excellent job, but the girl was still skeptical. After all, there was no way her mom could be cool.
After about a minute the instructor stepped it up a notch, placing more deliberate moves in the choreography. Some dancers had met their match, but Noelle’s mom was doing just fine. She swung her hips and grooved to the beat like she had been doing it for years.
Next was the real test of truth. It was time to take it up another level, and Noelle’s mom was ready for the challenge. Within no time she had the crowd cheering, and everyone was getting into the rhythm. This mom had certainly proved her value as a dancer and her coolness as a mom.
Members of the audience shouted praises to the dancer, and Noelle could not have been more proud. “She’s my inspiration!” she screamed as she watched the group roar in support for her mom.
Noelle certainly learned how cool her mom was, and now she probably looks at her in a completely different light. These two can grow closer than ever showing off their fantastic dance moves.
It is great to be able to share a passion with your children. Kids might think of their parents as lame or out-of-touch, but there is always something they can bond together over. Never be afraid to share your interests with the people you love.
