Rachael Ray has transitioned from happy-go-lucky chef to a television host who provides — among other things — makeovers for people who need a new look. Among them was Cathy, a mom, and grandmother who hadn’t updated her hairstyle since the 1980’s.
“This hair, these clothes, have been pretty much the same since 1986,” said Cathy. “My friends comment on my hair, about getting it cut, but I am out of my comfort zone with that. I’m afraid of change. The last time I went to the salon was maybe 25 years ago.”
Her hair was long, almost to her waist.
Her bangs were decidedly dated and her long curls were getting frizzy. Cathy had also made the mistake of dying her hair too light a shade of blonde, giving it a fake, brassy appearance.
As for her wardrobe, she estimated she hadn’t bought herself anything new in about 15 years.
Her style, she said, was plain, loose, and comfortable. But then something happened that gave her inspiration for changing her look.
“I don’t like to spend money on myself,” said Cathy. “I like to spend money on my family. My son is getting married in October and I would like to look nice for his wedding.”
So, when her daughter Kayla contacted the Rachael Ray Show, they brought Cathy to the studio for a makeover with celebrity stylist Kyan Douglas.
He pointed out a couple of things that were stopping Cathy from looking her best.
“Those bangs are some intense bangs, and there’s a little bit of a disconnect between her bangs and the length of the rest of her hair,” said Douglas. He also warned others to be careful when they dye their hair from drugstore color, especially when choosing a shade.
It was a difficult experience for Cathy, who cried when her hair was cut.
After more than 30 years with those long locks, she must have been extremely invested in them!
But when she walked out onto the stage in a red dress, the tears proved it was all worth it.
She looked absolutely amazing. The makeover team had not only cut her hair but also styled it beautifully. They colored it to be a more natural blonde as well. The result was that Cathy looked stunning and had shed years off her age.
They chose a slim-fitting, cherry red dress for her, which might have been a bit out of her comfort zone. But. Cathy had already done several things that day that she found challenging.! At the sight of her mom, Kayla started to cry.
The stylists had straightened Cathy’s naturally curly hair, letting it fall to just below her shoulders.
Comments on YouTube were full of compliments about how young and beautiful she looked.
“Wow!” wrote one commenter. “She is smoking! Literally 20 years off her appearance. She looks like her daughter’s sister. Great job guys!!”
There’s no doubt she looked amazing for her son’s wedding. Check out her fabulous new look below.
