There’s an approximate 3.3% chance of having twins, depending on a number of factors. But unless you know it runs in the family, it can come as quite a surprise!
On March 19th 2019, Alexzandria Wolliston was one of the lucky 3.3%, having just given birth to two beautiful twin boys in a Florida hospital.
Mark and Malakhi joined the family along with Alexzandria’s first daughter, a 3-year-old girl.
With three children now in tow, Alexzandria was ready to call it at that and didn’t plan on having any more babies.
Well life can be unpredictable, and as fate would have it in May 2019, she found out she was pregnant again!
And not just pregnant with one child… but two!
“I feel like I hit the twin lottery.” – Alexzandria Wolliston
And she kind of did! The odds of two sets of twins being born within the same year are incredibly low. So low that they’re not officially recorded, but her doctor says there’s a higher chance of winning the lottery.
Alexzandria couldn’t believe it when she heard she was carrying yet another set of twins; two more boys that were due to be born just before the end of the year. But she couldn’t be happier!
Usually, the twin gene is carried down through the mother’s side of the family, but the chance of having twins increases if both parents have the gene.
However, it is said that the gene usually skips a generation, so even if you’re not a twin but your mother was, it’s more likely that you will have twins of your own.
Prior to finding out about her twins for the second time, Alexzandria had no idea that the twin gene ran in her family.
This prompted her to look into more of her family’s history and she uncovered a sad yet interesting fact.
Both of her grandmothers had suffered the same tragedy, and each lost their own twin boys at birth.
This history explains why it was more likely for her to have two sets of twins, but four babies is one year is truly a miracle!
Alexzandria feels like her two beautiful sets of twin boys were no coincidence and not just a result of a family gene.
“I always say that I feel like my grandmothers gave me their kids because two sets of twins and their twins passed away. I feel like they just sent them down for me.” – Alexzandria Wolliston
Just 11 months after Mark and Malakhi arrived, twins Kaylen and Kayleb were born in December of 2019. What a Christmas gift!
I love the matching first letters of each set of twins’ names – too cute!
Alexzandria certainly has some work cut out for herself with raising five children, but she said her daughter helped her prepare. Not knowingly, but still helped.
“She was actually worse than them, so she was like two babies in one.” – Alexzandria Wolliston
Alexzandria says she is planning to keep her kid count no higher than the current 5.
