Giving birth during this trying time would be scary for just about anyone. With so much uncertainty in the world right now, it’d be a difficult experience. Even just going to the hospital can put a pregnant woman and her child at risk.
That’s probably the mindset a Lilburn, Georgia grandma was in as she rushed her daughter to the hospital on April 13 of this year. Her daughter, who was pregnant, was about to give birth. But then, something terrible happened.
They were in a rush
When Crystan Graham realized she was about to have her baby, she knew she needed to get to the hospital right away. Her mom, Krystal Jones, got in the car to rush her and a one-year-old to Gwinnett Medical Center. Considering her daughter was in active labor, she was trying to reach their destination as quickly as possible.
A dangerous ride
Not only was it a stressful situation to begin with, but it was also early in the morning. Adding to the stress was the fact the streets were wet. This created a recipe for disaster. When the grandma turned the wheel, she ended up hydroplaning.
The unthinkable happened
The car didn’t stop moving right away. But rather, it kept going until it hit a power pole and a curb. Finally, the car ran into a brick wall. The windows of the SUV shattered upon impact.
A policeman was on the scene
Luckily for everyone involved, policeman Daniel Bride happened to pass the scene just a few seconds after the incident occurred. His colleague, Sgt. Matt Madden, arrived only a few minutes later. With their body cameras on, they captured some footage.
A bizarre situation
What happened in the accident is truly an unbelievable story. The mom gave birth to the baby during the accident. But after the police arrived, the newborn was nowhere to be found.
Bodycam footage reveals the confusion
Since the police had body camera recordings of the event, they played them back to get a closer look at what happened. Bride asked Jones, “Where was the baby at?” You can hear her reply: “We don’t know! I was just trying to get to the hospital.”
A frantic search begins
Since it was still dark outside, the police had to use flashlights. They were looking for the baby everywhere possible. They searched the ground for the newborn but still had no luck.
An unbelievable discovery
Miraculously, they managed to find the baby. The umbilical cord was somehow still attached. Huff said, “There is like a small little drop-off under the seat. And that’s where the baby laid right into a little pocket. And that’s where I found her.”
The family was thrilled
The police officers could then tell the mother her baby had been found. In the video, Bride says, “We got your baby. Looks to be fine. She’s breathing and moving just fine.” Jones said, Thank you Jesus!”
Taken to the hospital
After the accident, the entire family was taken to the hospital. The newborn is now named Cea Anderson. And for a little while, she’s being kept the NICU at Gwinnett Medical Center. Her mother has already been discharged.
These police officers are true heroes for thinking quickly and saving this precious baby’s life.
