Halloween has always been a time for kids to roam their neighborhoods, dressed in costumes and collecting candy.
For many, it’s a night full of laughter, fun, and sugary treats—a celebration kids look forward to every year.
But this past Halloween, in Woodhaven, Michigan, a group of young trick-or-treaters turned their candy-filled night into a beautiful act of kindness, and it was all caught on camera.
In Woodhaven, Halloween usually meant excitement for Amy Schmitt and her son Jacob.
Each year, they dressed up and enjoyed handing out candy to the eager trick-or-treaters who visited their home.
However, this year, Halloween came with an unexpected twist.
Amy’s son had faced a medical emergency that landed him in the hospital, so she spent Halloween by his side, far from the festivities they both loved.
Realizing that they wouldn’t be able to join in the Halloween fun, Amy decided to leave a note on her front porch.
She shared in her note that her son was in the hospital and apologized for not being able to pass out candy.
For Amy, it was simply a way to let neighbors know they wouldn’t be home to celebrate.
As Halloween night rolled on, Amy’s doorbell camera began to capture something incredible.
One by one, children who stopped at her door to trick-or-treat noticed the note and paused.
Instead of turning away disappointed, these young trick-or-treaters were visibly moved by Amy’s message.
In a surprising act of compassion, they chose to take action.
The children, still clutching their own candy bags, decided to give back to Amy’s son Jacob.
They began emptying handfuls of their own hard-earned candy onto a chair where the note was posted.
“It’s overwhelming,” Amy later told WXYZ-TV News, touched and surprised by the kindness that unfolded on her doorstep.
Among these thoughtful children was six-year-old Mia, who had already finished her first round of trick-or-treating.
After filling her bag with treats, Mia was struck by Amy’s note and couldn’t shake the feeling of wanting to help.
She asked her dad, James, if they could go out again, but this time with a new mission in mind.
Mia was determined to gather even more candy to give to Amy’s son, ensuring he would feel included in the holiday, too.
As Mia went door to door, she collected candy as she had before, but this time, she set it aside for Amy’s son instead of keeping it for herself.
Her father, James, watched in admiration as his daughter gave up her Halloween treats willingly.
He shared how proud he was of Mia, noting that her decision to give away her candy was entirely her own.
Amy was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the neighborhood kids and their parents.
Reflecting on their generosity, she shared her gratitude, saying,
“It’s just amazing what the parents have raised these kids to… And to do that, even without your parents there, is just remarkable.”
For Amy and her son, the candy symbolized more than a sweet treat—it was a reminder of the love that surrounded them.
The story of these kids’ kindness quickly resonated far beyond Woodhaven.
The doorbell footage capturing their actions went viral, amassing over 320,000 views within just a few days.
