If you’ve ever watched an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, you know that the famous host loves a good makeover. Fans of the show would write in and send videos to Oprah, begging for her help with one of their loved ones.

Sisters Christine and Cindy pleased with Oprah to help their 63-year-old mother, Joan, get a new look.

Their mom had been rocking the same beehive hairdo for their entire lives and they felt the look was too dated. In fact, it was even holding her back!

“She recently canceled a vacation for fear that she would set off the metal detectors and airport security would confiscate her hairpins,” Oprah told her audience.

For 37 years, Joan wore her hair the same exact way. Even after she went gray, she kept up the process of doing her hair in a perfect coifed beehive style.

Cindy said in their video that it was such a big deal if her mom took her hair down to dive in the lake with them. She and Christine believe that if swimming up high was an Olympic sport, Joan would win the gold medal.

Every Wednesday, at about 5:30 in the morning, Joan would wake up to begin the 4-hour process of doing her hair.

She would begin by undoing her hair. She’d take out 12 hairpins, undo the teasing, and then wash her hair in the kitchen sink. She then sat under a hairdryer for about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the weather.

To achieve her bouffant, Joan used 4 different types of rollers to get the perfect curl. She then used several different brushes to tease her hair, layers of hairspray, and her trusty 12 pins to style her hair exactly to her liking.

The sisters didn’t just have an issue with their mom’s hair, but also her wardrobe. In their video for Oprah, they rifled through their mom’s closet and pulled out numerous articles of denim clothing.

“She says she feels like 50, so let’s look like you’re 50!” Cindy said about her mother.

The video swayed Oprah and she brought the family onto her show. Using an expert beauty team, having Ken Paves tackle Joan’s outdated hairdo.

Cindy and Christine were anxiously sitting in the crowd when Oprah asked if they’d like to see their mom. When Joan finally came out onto the stage of The Oprah Winfrey show, the entire audience gasped. Then everyone erupted into cheers when Joan did a little twirl on stage to show off her new look.

Joan had finally let her hair down, ditched the gray hair and denim, and looked like a brand new woman. Oprah even told Joan’s daughters that she looked like their sister, not their mother!
