Contestant Mitch Tambo returned to the stage of Australia’s Got Talent with another cultural act, only this time he put a spin on John Farnham’s “You’re the Voice.”
One judge was so blown away by his powerful performance that it left her no choice but to award Tambo the Golden Buzzer, which is his second this season. It’s a video that’s sweeping the internet and leaving viewers across the world in goosebumps.
He’s not your typical musical artist.
According to his website, Tambo considers himself a “proud Gamilaraay man” who’s dedicated to his First Nations cultural background and those who are part of it. He combines his musical skills with this commitment, bringing entertainment to audiences all over Australia.
29-year-old Tambo decided to take his passion and talents to the stage of the reality TV competition, AGT. He told The Northern Daily Leader:
“I really decided to enter the show because I felt like it’s such a big platform and I wanted to show Australia that our culture is alive, well and relevant in 2019.”
From his very first appearance, Tambo was worthy of the Golden Buzzer. It’s the ultimate honor a contestant can receive for their act.
During his audition, Tambo put on a musical performance that combined contemporary with traditional song and dance. One judge, Nicole Scherzinger, was so moved by it that she slammed the Golden Buzzer. It meant that Tambo would be heading to the semi-finals.
The second time around Tambo did not disappoint.
On a recent episode of Australia’s Got Talent, the contestant took the stage once again with elements of his culture. Dressed in headgear and accompanied by backup singers and a didgeridoo player – Tambo performed the song, “You’re the Voice.” Only he sang it in the Gamilaraay language.
The judges seemed captivated during his performance, which went to another level when screens behind Tambo lit up with profiles of his face.
At this point, he switched over to singing a portion of the famous song in English, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Tambo received a standing ovation for his rendition of John Farnham’s “You’re the Voice.” But that’s not all.
Nicole Scherzinger gushed,
“Mitch, oh my gosh, I respect you so much for preserving your culture and giving it a voice, and I am so proud that you are my Golden Buzzer…”
After being complimented by the other judges, singer Nathalie Bassingthwaite addresses Tambo, saying:
“I’m telling you right now you are the new voice of our generation. I love you and because of that, I’m sorry but I have no choice but to…”
She then gets up and slams down on the Golden Buzzer, initiating a storm of golden confetti on the stage.
Tambo’s thrilled by the honor and it can be seen in his reaction. It secured him a spot as one of two finalists.
He then addresses everyone with his own powerful message:
“For me personally, I really want to be the voice to encourage all of my people and all my youth to be proud of who they are and where they come from. But to everyone, from all walks of life, and cultures, and minorities, and religions to be proud of who you are …We just got to love one another and embrace one another so we can move forward.”
You don’t want to miss this highly-emotional and energized performance that’s touching people around the globe.
