Speeding on the highway will surely earn you a violation and a trooper is always ready to give you a ticket.

Mike Powers was on his way to Mississippi when he realized that the highway trooper by the roadside at Batesville was signaling him to pull over. He was on a trip from Nashville for work purposes, and earning a violation is not exactly ideal but he decided to stop over anyway.

After all, he knows that he needs to abide by the law. Mike drove and eventually pulled over as the trooper signaled.

The cop is Trooper Jason Ales and he marked Mike’s vehicle for speeding.

Getting a speeding ticket while on official business is not a good experience at all. However, Mike thought that it would not hurt if he asked the trooper how he was.

He felt compelled to throw a simple question to know how the trooper was feeling that day.

“I said, ‘How are you, and how are the officers and the troopers in Mississippi doing in light of all the senseless killing around the country of police officers?’ He said he’s doing good and it’s tough, but that he was going to keep doing what he needed to do to help people,” Mike said.

As it turned out, Mike’s simple words made the trooper’s day.

Mike was unaware that Trooper Ales was having a rough day and knowing that someone wanted to know how he felt was comforting for him. The short but meaningful words from a stranger gave the trooper something to be thankful for that day.

Mike saw how the trooper felt inside and decided to give him his wooden saint bracelet. It looked like he needed it more than he did.

“I told him, ‘I want you to have this. Hopefully, if you ever needed to, God forbid, it will come in handy and keep you safe,'” the man from Nashville said.

Trooper Ales was so moved by Mike’s act of kindness and genuine concern that he decided to void his speeding ticket.

And true enough, Mike’s kindness resonated positively with the trooper that he almost teared up out of gratitude.

“I was so touched by it I almost teared up there,” said Trooper Ales. “I gave this man a ticket, now. I gave this man a ticket worth maybe $200-something, but still out of his kindness he wanted to give me something.”

Mike realized that it is always important to be nice and kind even to strangers we meet every day. We do not know how others are feeling or experiencing, so a little kindness in our words will not hurt.

“My day was stressful because I was trying to get somewhere I didn’t think I’d make it to. That was nothing compared to what he deals with on a daily basis, the stress he has to deal with not knowing if he’s going to make it back home,” said Mike.
