There is power in numbers. When a community of people come together under a common goal, there is nothing that can stand in the way. When this family experienced a devastating loss, they needed nothing short of a miracle, and that is exactly what they got.
Dylan Miller was just like any other teen. He attended school, loved sports, and enjoyed his free time with his friends. He was a football player at Verrado High School in Arizona last December, when suddenly everything changed.
One night, Dylan was out when got into a terrible car accident. The car rolled over. When it finally came to a stop, Dylan’s skull had been completely crushed. He was in a coma when the paramedics arrived.
When he arrived at the hospital, doctors were doubtful that he would make a recovery. They told his parents to spend their final moments with him, believing that the damage from this tragedy was fatal.
Dylan’s parents were crushed. “To get to a hospital and have a doctor tell you to say goodbye to him because he’s probably not going to survive, I mean, that’s a parent’s nightmare,” said Dylan’s father, Deron, to KNXV Phoenix.
In a last-ditch attempt to save Dylan, doctors prepared for surgery. Their best bet was to remove part of Dylan’s crushed skull, allowing space for the rest of his head to heal. They didn’t expect the teen to survive, but everyone hoped for the best.
Then, a miracle happened. Dylan’s parents were utterly shocked as the boy’s eyes blinked open. This would have been enough for them, but this young man wasn’t anywhere near done proving his strength.
Dylan began to communicate, speaking but mainly relying on his hands. He keeps his voice at a whisper because his vocal chords are so weak, but he is well on his way toward even greater recovery.
What’s even more shocking: Dylan has already taken his first steps. He has accomplished so many seemingly impossible feats already, and he is showing no signs of slowing his progress.
Dylan’s parents thank the community for this miracle. They have been overwhelmed by the amount of support Dylan has received. He is constantly getting “cards and letters and just cute things that little kids have made.” The community’s love has inspired this exceptional teen to keep progressing on the road to recovery.
It is amazing what the belief of a group can do. This community has witnessed a true miracle in the recovery of a boy whose skull was completely crushed.
