Being in the military is a lot of work, but it’s never a job that is thought of lightly. Most of us stare at soldiers as untouchable specimens of bravery. I mean, I know for a fact that I could never do the things they do (or even handle seeing the things they see). Joining the military is dangerous, it’s physically demanding, and quite frankly, it’s pretty scary stuff to deal with— especially if the one joining is your child.
Our children are our pride and joy. They’re an extension of us, a piece of our hearts that have been placed outside of our bodies. After spending the past 18 years (or more) trying to protect them, it can almost seem like a slap in the face to be told that our baby is leaving to join the military. Basically putting themselves in harm’s way without any concern for our feelings or thoughts.
On one hand, we’re proud of them. This choice goes to show that our child has been raised with values, and it’s certainly proof that they are not afraid of some hard work. On the other hand, it’s terrifying— what if something happens to them? What if they are sent overseas? What if (God forbid) they don’t end up making it home?
These are the emotions Greg Harris was likely experiencing when his son Cory told him that he had enlisted in the military.
Despite his worries and concerns, Greg went to the airport with Cory to send him off to Japan, where Cory would ultimately be stationed as a marine for the next 14 months. When it was finally time for Cory to come home, he decided that he would surprise his father upon his return. He enlists his mother and a local restaurant to help accomplish the feat.
In the viral video, Cory’s mom records an unsuspecting Greg examining the menu of a local Jack Allen’s Kitchen restaurant.
Within a few seconds, Cory walks up dressed in a waiter’s uniform…
And I think Greg’s reaction speaks for itself.
