However, a new map has been created to provide a definitive answer on where you stand in terms of income and it’s quite eye-opening to say the least.
Alabama


The middle-class income range in Alabama is between $38,582 and $115,170 for a two-person family, between $44,351 and $132,392 for a three-person family, and between $54,111 and $161,524 for a four-person family. According to Investopedia, Alabama ranks as one of the poorest states in the nation. It’s also challenging to earn enough money to be considered middle-class, with only 35.52% of households being middle income.
Alaska
The middle-class income range in Alaska is between $57,776 and $172,466 for a two-person family, between $62,818 and $187,516 for a three-person family, and between $69,727 and $208,140 for a four-person family. While the middle-class income may seem average, the cost of living in the state can be challenging due to high costs for food and housing. Nevertheless, Alaskans are managing well, with 45.57% of households considered middle-income.


Arizona

Arkansas

While the middle-class income ranges seem high, some claim that Connecticut isn’t quite friendly to the middle class. Data supports this, as Connecticut has one of the lowest percentages of middle-class households at 38.82%.


Delaware

Delaware has some of the highest income ranges in the country, especially for four-person families. With an average household income of around $72,420, it’s safe to say that Delaware is doing well, which aligns with the overall high scores of the northeast.

Despite its geographical isolation, Hawaii’s middle-class income ranges rank among the top 25 in the United States. The median household income is $76,084, and the poverty rate is lower than the national average at 9%.


Idaho
The middle-class income range in Idaho is between $41,527 and $123,960 for a two-person family, between $45,395 and $135,508 for a three-person family, and between $53,479 and $159,640 for a four-person family. A total of 41.6% of households in Idaho are middle-income. However, compared to other top middle-income states on the list, it has a smaller-than-average percentage of upper-income households. Idaho just barely avoids being in the bottom 10 for lowest middle-class income ranges.

Iowa is doing well, with one of the highest percentages of middle-class families in the nation. Half of the households, 40.93%, in the state are considered middle-income. In terms of range rankings, it’s right in the middle.


Kansas
In Kansas, the middle-class income range for a two-person family is between $45,939 and $137,130, for a three-person family it’s between $52,285 and $156,076, and for a four-person family, it’s between $60,490 and $180,568. Kansas has a significant number of households that qualify as “middle-class,” with the percentage of middle-income households reaching 40.3%. Interestingly, the U.S. Census Bureau found that the average household in the state is only 2.52 people.


Kentucky
The middle-class income range in Kentucky is between $37,627 and $112,318 for a two-person family, between $44,132 and $131,736 for a three-person family, and between $53,873 and $160,814 for a four-person family. Kentucky is one of the bottom 10 states in the nation with the lowest percentage of middle-class families. Only 36.65% of households can be considered middle-income, while Kentucky also has a staggering poverty rate of 14.9%.


Louisiana
In Louisiana, the middle-class income range for a two-person family is between $37,312 and $111,378, for a three-person family it’s between $43,139 and $128,774, and for a four-person family, it’s between $54,792 and $163,558. Louisiana ranks in the bottom 10 for two- and three-person family middle-income ranges. It ranks a little higher for four-person families, but the number of people living in the middle-class range is only 40.9%. Most people live in lower-income households, which make up 45.7%.


Maine
The middle-class income range in Maine is between $43,831 and $130,840 for a two-person family, between $53,410 and $159,434 for a three-person family, and between $62,685 and $187,120 for a four-person family. Maine ranks 14th among states with the highest percentage of middle-income households, with 37.63% of households meeting the criteria. The state’s poverty rate is relatively low, with only 10.6% of people living in poverty, possibly due to the lower income range.

Nevada
The middle-class income range in Nevada is between $44,128 and $131,726 for a two-person family, between $48,075 and $143,508 for a three-person family, and between $55,281 and $165,018 for a four-person family. Nevada is an intriguing state, with one of the highest percentages of families living in middle-income households – 39.68%. However, the state’s unemployment rate is higher than the national average at 4.7%. Nevada is also one of the most tax-friendly states on the list.


New Hampshire

Northeastern states like New Hampshire have high rankings for middle-class income ranges. The state ranks fairly high for two-person families and fifth for both three- and four-person households. Oregon’s income ranges are neither terrible nor spectacular. Their ranges are middle-of-the-road, and the median household income is around $66,146. While this isn’t bad, neighboring states ranked higher.
