This year was riddled with unprecedented events that stunned our daily routine. Even celebrations like Halloween had a shade of doubt cast over it.
The COVID-19 pandemic has definitely left a stain on our idea of โnormalcyโ and has pushed us to the brink of despair. Every day has been a constant reminder of the little things we used to cherish without even batting an eye. One of those things includes the celebration of Halloween.
A Calgary meteorologist, Jordan Witzel, puts on a hilarious spectacle when he decided to dress up as a cheese bun from the nearby Glamorgan Bakery located on Richmond Road. For over 40 years, this bakery has been in business serving up its staple buttery buns that come in white or brown, and now Witzel decided to fashionably pay homage to the establishmentโs prized menu item.
โIโm yummy, Iโm warm and my name is Glammy,โ Witzel explained. โGlammy Chezbunns. Hey, guess what? I put shorts on this year. I always like to put tights on but these ones were see-through, let me tell you.โ
This funny costume came as an inspiration from a joke Witzel had with his coworkers Sue Deyell and Andrew Schultz from 770 CHQR Global News Radio. The COVID-19 pandemic had been dampening the progression of the 2019-2020 NHL season, and so Witzel made an interesting bargain. He claimed he would purchase his two coworkerโs their own cheese buns from the bakery if the NHL successfully figured out a strategy for continuing the season. Consequently, the NHL did in fact resolve the issue of team-play which left Witzel a loser in his friendly wager.
To honor his bet, Witzel organized for a special delivery of cheese buns to be sent to Deyell while she broadcasted live on television on Global News Morning Calgaryโs Dallas Flexhaug. Deyell looked very delighted when she realized Witzel fulfilled his end of the deal.
โIt looks like Jordan Witzel has made good on his bet โฆ Iโm impressed,โ Deyell said. โIโm impressed that heโs got props as well for his costume.โ
His costume was nothing short of comedy. He looked dishevelled with the way it was put together. He even stuffed his โbunsโ to make it look poofy and cartoony. His outfit caused a barrage of seemingly unending laughter from one of the anchors and even a few chuckles from the production crew. There was nothing ordinary about this at all, but thatโs all the more reason why itโs appropriate perfectly appropriate for this yearโs theme of unordinary occurrences.
More than just a laughing stock, Witzel made sure to make more of an impact in his local community by deciding to reach out to several Global Calgaryโs community partners for a heartwarming idea. Witzel purchased several hundreds of fresh cheese buns from the Glamorgan Bakery and donated them to those most in need.
Witzelโs donation amassed a total of $200, which was directly matched by Global Calgary, The Glamorgan Bakery, Bowest Appliances and former anchor Gord Gillies.
In addition, Witzel had about 350 bags of cheese buns-roughly 2100 cheese buns in total- that was distributed to the cityโs homeless population.
This wasnโt Witzelโs first Halloween rodeo
This wasnโtโ the first year that Witzel has come out wearing head-turning costumes. In 2019, the meteorologist premiered a unicorn attire in which he declared himself as, โFerdinand the Mystical Meteorologist.โ
In 2016, he paid respects to one of Steven Spielbergโs biggest movie hit, E.T. The Extraterrestrial, by dressing up as Elliot. His pug, Benson, was used to represent the character of E.T.
His list of costumes keeps going!
In 2015, Witzel dressed as the Stay Puft marshmallow man from the movie โGhostbustersโ. His co-anchor couldnโt seem to hold her laughs as she clearly wasnโt taking Witzel seriously.
He also dressed up as Daisy Dukes during the Calgary Stampede and even as Will Ferrellโs role as โElfโ for when he was learning how to help Santa at Southcentre Mall.
The crรจme of the crรจme might go to the outfit worn when Witzel rappelled down the Sunlife building in downtown. He wore generic tights and tutu just to show off his unabashed cute side.
Many things were in jeopardy this year, but Halloween remains as one of Americaโs favorite past times. Witzel reminds us how to laugh at ourselves even during the bizarre, scary times we live in.
