As if women didn’t have to deal with enough call-calling, sexist and misogynistic behavior before the internet, but the internet seems to have increased that tenfold.
Nowadays men are emboldened to say the most horrific things because they can hide behind their computers.
Women who are in fields are work that are traditionally male-dominated, such as jobs that have to do with sports or video games, often feel the brunt of these terribly hurtful and sometimes threatening remarks.
The fact is that men are only ones who have the power to put an end to this horrible behavior.
When men decide that they won’t teach their sons to speak to or think of women in this way and when men decide that these comments are more than just a joke, women will be able to enjoy their careers without being tormented by the evil words of hateful men.
But the problem is men just don’t get it. Some men have no idea the types of things women have to endure and the horrible things that are said to them just because they love their jobs.
T0 drive home how true this is, the folks at Just Not Sports decided to have regular men read some of the tweets sports reporters Sarah Spain and Julie DiCaro have received.
Let’s just say these men were shocked by what they heard and that someone would actually speak this way to another human being for simply doing their job. Some of the tweets started out on the lighter side, saying that their voices sound like a “nagging wife” or that they are just “mediocre” at their jobs. Then the comments get downright dark.
“One of the hockey players should beat you with a stick like the whore you are,” said one comment, which almost brought DiCaro to tears hearing it out loud.
One of the men could barely speak the next thing he was about to read aloud.
“This is why we don’t hire any female unless we need our [reference to a sexual act] or food cooked,” said the man reading this tweet, looking like he was about to cry.
“There’s a lot of C-word,” observed one man.
“I don’t think I can even say that,” another man said when asked to read a different tweet.
The rest of the tweets wished horrible violent acts such as death and rape upon these women.
“We wouldn’t say it to their faces. So let’s not type it,” the video ends with along with the hashtag #MoreThanMean.
