The very second your newborn is placed in your arms, all fears and worries, aches and pains magically disappear. It’s as if time stands still as you stare at her perfect little face or count each and every one of his adorable tiny fingers and toes.
You’re suddenly compelled to catch every single expression, every milestone, every moment on video and in photos of this miraculous little person whose personality evolves every day. Newborn photographers like Justine Tuhy love their job for that very reason.
The Columbus, Ohio, photographer focuses on weddings, families and newborn photoshoots. She’s been capturing the blissful beauty surrounding newborns for years and thanks to a background in the pediatric medical field, she optimizes her experience and photographic skills to catch an infant’s aura at some point in the first two weeks following birth.
Justine relies on a variety of props to safely and sweetly cradle the newborns for their photo shoots, such as a wicker basket, a tin bucket, a wooden cradle or a soft blanket. Most of the time the babies are snuggly swaddled in beautiful materials or positioned in a comfy pose, their cheeks nestled on their folded hands.
Because newborns sleep so much, most of Justine’s subjects slumber straight through their photo shoots, emitting a peaceful and angelic feel to the finished photos.
Except for newborn Luna Musa whose newborn photo shoot has gone viral.
In a 90-minute photo shoot, Luna was wide awake and very much at ease. However, she had the funniest expression on her face. Luna’s dad Christian refers to it as “mean-mugging.”
“She’s been mean-mugging since day one. She’s either mean-mugging non-stop, or just unimpressed.”
Luna was born Nov. 15 and really hasn’t cracked much of a smile ever since. Her intimidating look had Justine chuckling, too.
“She was completely content the entire time. She just gave me the stare down the entire time as well. I always wonder when they’re that awake, ‘What are they thinking exactly? Do you love this or majorly dislike it?'”
Christian and Luna’s mom Lori couldn’t stop cracking up when they received Luna’s proofs from Justine. Christian said it reminded him of himself.
“I used to do a mean-mug [face] in my office as a joke with my colleagues. Now instead of having that weird face, I just have my phone with a photo of Luna on it.”
When Justine shared Luna’s photos on her photography business’ Facebook page, the post erupted. Tens of thousands of people have commented on the photos, with many sharing photos of funny faces their own children have made. Christian said he can’t believe all the memes his baby girl is now a part of on social media.
“What we thought was funny was my sister-in-law texted us and said, ‘One of my patients came over and told me to look at this cute baby and I was like, ‘That’s my niece.’ We’ve seen her face on ‘Game of Thrones’ characters, Baby Yoda, everywhere.”
Everyone credits Justine with snatching Luna’s personality in these two viral photos, but she said it was all Luna.
“All I was doing was my job. Miss Luna did all the incredible work with her silly facial expressions. I’m super blessed to have captured this special moment for the family that they can cherish forever.”
