Would you trade your car for a packet of sauce?
A Michigan man did, making 23-year-old Rachel Marie one lucky woman. As a graphic designer and huge fan of the cartoon show “Rick and Morty,” Marie was really excited when she found out that McDonald’s was giving out a limited amount of “Rick and Morty Szechuan sauce.” Never would she have imagined that a tiny packet of McDonald’s sauce would score her a free car.
On the Saturday morning of the sauce release, Marie drove 45 minutes to Detroit in order to get in the waiting line at the local McDonalds that was going to release the sauce in the afternoon.
She told HuffPost:
“When McDonald’s said they were bringing it back, I thought it would be cool to get a sauce. By the time that happened, there were hundreds of people waiting. The line snaked around the building.”
After waiting for hours, she was lucky enough to be one of the 20 people receiving the rare sauce with the cool design.
Twenty packets of sauce for hundreds of people waiting made a lot of fans very upset.
A lot of them didn’t get as lucky as Marie and waited hours at their local McDonalds to come back empty-handed. They are all very angry at McDonald’s for distributing such a limited quantity of sauces. McDonald’s responded by making a promise to bring back more packets of Szechuan sauce in the winter, according to Polygon.com.
The sauce was featured in the Season 3 premiere of “Rick and Morty.”
In the episode, Rick decided to make it his life’s mission to find the sauce, which was created in 1998 to promote the Disney movie of “Mulan.” Since then, the sauce has been craved by hundreds of “Rick and Morty” fans, including Marie.
The first thing that popped into Marie’s mind was to eat the sauce while watching an episode of “Rick and Morty.” But after thoughtful consideration, she decided to see what she could get for it instead. She posted a picture of the sauce on Pin Nation, a pin-trading Facebook group.
Marie told Business Insider:
“There was actually a large response with some nice pins. But if I could get a car, I thought, why not ask?”
She never thought that someone would actually take her offer seriously and trade a car for the sauce.
The man who responded to her post, negotiated the sauce for a 2000 Volkswagen Golf Mk4. Marie couldn’t believe her eyes. The car was brought over to her place so that she could see the car’s condition. The man was apparently a very dedicated fan of “Rick and Morty” and already had another car.
Business Insider interviewed the man, who justified this bizarre trade by telling them that he “just needed me some friggin’ sauce!!”
The car is currently at the garage for final modifications and will be ready for Marie to drive very soon.
Marie is extremely happy for having held on to the sauce instead of eating it and making this deal at this time. Her friend, who also got the sauce, ate it all before realizing that people were easily offering up to $300 for the sauce.
“He did say it was amazing, though,” Marie told HuffPost. “Definitely worth $300.”
