While most people spend their whole lives trying to get onto Americaโs Got Talent, one Kentucky man, Marty Brown, pretty much ended up on it by accident! When he and his wife went on vacation, he had no idea that later on in the day he would be auditioning for the judges. Yet, that is exactly what happened.
His wife surprised him by telling him she had signed him up for an audition and Marty just sort of went along with it.
She told him to get in the car, didnโt tell him where they were going, and when he finally found out, he was completely shocked!
The story is probably best told in Martyโs wifeโs own words:
โI tricked him into coming today,โ his wife told the judges.
โI called in sick, and I put his guitar in the trunk, and I put him in the car. Heโs trusting enough to say where are we going and I said, โwell, youโre going to do Americaโs Got Talentโ.
The judges couldnโt believe it.
โWow, he had no idea?โ Howie Mandel commented. โThatโs amazing!โ
While some people might not appreciate being tricked like that, Marty was super excited when he found out.
Hours later, he stepped onto the stage full of energy and raring to go.
The song he chose to play for them was Bob Dylanโs โMake You Feel My Loveโ.
โItโs my wifeโs favorite song. I sing it for her in the kitchen all the time,โ explained Marty.
He and his wife obviously have a very beautiful relationship. For a guy who had no idea he was about to audition in front of the judges, his performance ended up being pretty incredible too.
As soon as he started singing, everyoneโs jaws dropped.
Marty has that perfect country voice every country musician wishes they had, the kind that gives you goosebumps. There was so much emotion in the way he sang the song. You could tell it really meant something to him.
He finished up the performance to roaring applause from the audience.
โI am telling you without a doubt, you are a great undiscovered treasure,โ said Howard Stern.
Marty Brown basically came out of nowhere, going from kitchen musician hobbyist to country legend in the course of a day. Although, we later discovered Marty actually did have at least a little experience under his belt. Between 1990 and 1996, he recorded three country albums. No one knew it at the time though.
โI loved it. We were hanging on your every word,โ commented Mel B. โGood job, seriously good job!โ
Howie mentioned that when looking at Marty at first, he never expected how talented he was going to end up being.
โYou taught us something tonight. Donโt judge a book by its cover,โ said Howie. โYou know, you came out here and you surprised me. I think you are amazingโ
It was the first time in history that anyone has ever actually been tricked into appearing on Americaโs Got Talent before, and it came as a total shock to everyone how well Marty did, Marty included.
He had no idea that the world would dig his singing as much as they did, yet that is exactly what happened. Millions of people fell in love with the Kentucky man and his fantastic wife that day, the judges too. The end result was a โyesโ from all four of them, sending Marty off to Las Vegas for the next round of the competition.
Of course, as soon as he heard the news, Marty gave his wife a big old embrace and kiss.
They are both such fantastic humans.
