Combat-Trained Marine Stops Armed Robbery at Gas Station
Two men decide to rob a BP gas station because it's an "easy target." They soon learn, however, that it is anything but.

Remember that time you robbed a mini-mart and it turns out that the person working behind the counter was a black belt in martial arts AND a former marine combat instructor? Yeah, me neither. But two Kentucky residents who thought they had identified an easy target in a local BP do. The story goes a little something like this…

Two men scope out a local BP and decide that yes, it is the ideal place to rob. Why? Because gas stations are always easy targets, and the people who work there have absolutely zero commitment to their jobs, right? Uh, yeah, think again.

But these men didn’t think twice, so they followed through with their plan and hit the place up on a Wednesday evening, right around the time that most people get off work. The guy working behind the counter, Aaron Jacobs and soon to be our protagonist, thinks that they’re just two average Joes looking for an after work pick-me-up. Maybe a Red Bull, maybe a Monster? Maybe even a case of Bud Light. Who is he to judge? But then he notices that one of the men starts to round the counter…

It’s not until one of the men is standing directly behind him that Aaron realizes what is going on. His gas station is being robbed. He turns around and sees a 12-inch blade coming his way.

Anyone else would have shrieked and opened the cash register drawer right then and there, or, as one reporter put it, “I’d probably throw my wallet at him, tell him not to hurt me, then cry and wet myself.” However, Aaron is not most people.

You see, Aaron has some “training,” shall we say. Aaron has a black belt in karate and is a former combat instructor for the United States Marines, one of the toughest branches in the military to join. In short, he’s not necessarily someone you want to mess with. Unfortunately for these two men, they weren’t aware of Aaron’s background.

When Aaron saw the knife coming his way, he knew he had to react. “When you train in martial arts you train your body to react,” he said. In short, he’s saying he had no choice but to do what he did next.

Aaron’s quick reaction time took the man off guard. He wrestled the knife out of the man’s hand and then rammed him face-first into a nearby display rack. All the while, Aaron was concerned about the safety of the customers and the products, but not once during the altercation did he worry about his own safety.

“The cigar rack got knocked over, which, I was worried about that during the time,” he said with a chuckle. “And then the chips rack exploded and I’m thinking, ‘Oh no, not the chips rack.’”

Even these men weren’t completely clueless as to fail to realize what they were really up against. After the brief tussle with Aaron, the two men ran out the door and fled the scene. Aaron hit the alarm button to notify authorities, but by the time the police actually go there, it was too late–the men had gotten away.

However, Aaron was just happy that the customers were safe and, of course, that his gas station didn’t end up getting robbed after all.

So, next time you’re thinking about robbing a gas station, just remember that there might be other Aaron Jacobs hiding behind the counter.

On a serious note (because we know that you’re not the robbing type), we’re thankful for men and women like Aaron who risk their lives for us both in the combat zone and out of it.

The world needs more people like him, who are willing to step up and protect others when others would have backed down. YOU can be that person, even without combat training or a black belt in martial arts, as sometimes all it takes to save someone is a few kind words and a smile.
