Military training is not something that most veterans can turn off.
For better or worse, the discipline and quick-thinking skills you learn in the military are with you for the rest of your life. Although it may make you a little bit intense, it can also come in handy in situations that call for action. As many have likely already read, Las Vegas was recently struck by one of these emergency situations when an active shooter opened fire on a concert venue.
Fortunately, one former marine decided to take drastic action.
As the shooting was unfolding, 29-year-old Taylor Winston saw that many people were wounded.
Though he knew they would need immediate emergency aid, there was no way to get them there. He began looking for a vehicle and soon found a huge truck with the keys let inside. Without thinking about it further, he started up the truck and began loading people in the back of it, driving them to the hospital.
Winston’s quick thinking turned out to be a huge success.
As a result of his actions, Winston was able to save more than two dozen people in the course of two trips.
Although it took some time to finally track down the owner, Winston got in touch with him three days later to apologize and explain his actions:
Although the man was relieved to have his truck back, the bigger relief of the day was that so many people could be helped.
Needless to say, Winston’s actions are being hailed as heroic and brave, and his story has been covered by numerous major news outlets. Commenters online are also weighing in with their own opinions on the story:
Although Winston had to bend the rules somewhat to get the job done, his actions saved many lives.
The situation in Las Vegas has gone on record as the new deadliest shooting on American soil. Although much of what happened that day was chaotic, the people of the city showed in many different stories that they were capable of banding together against the threat. Thanks to Winston’s quick thinking, many people are still alive who might not have been otherwise.
Still, Las Vegas is facing a crisis now in light of these events.
Local hospitals are asking for blood donations and other officials have started a GoFundMe page to help pay for medical expenses. If this story moved you, please consider donating.
Thanks for your quick thinking, Taylor!
