A Lesson in Inhumanity

Fortunately, there are plenty of great stories about compassion and humanity, but there are also some that are just the opposite.

William is a boy with no arms because he was born this way, but he has replaced the need for these limbs with courage and resourcefulness.

William Has Learned to Feed Himself, and He is Certainly Independent

William has replaced his arms with his feet and is very good at feeding himself with this improvised way.

He Loves Pancakes

Most will agree that IHOPS is well recognized for their pancakes.

What they are also becoming recognized for is discrimination, at least in one instance.

The General Manager

In order for William to be able to eat, he has to sit on the table.

The General Manager of the IHOP informed William’s mom that William could not sit on the table, nor could he touch the syrup containers. All of which meant that William would not be able to feed himself.

The Reason

According to the Manager, the reason was because it was a health issue.

William’s Mom wonders how many times the managers asks patrons if they have washed their hands before touching the syrup containers? Also, stating that she had washed Williams feet prior to ordering, just like any Mom would wash the hands of their little ones prior to a meal.

Still deeply disturbed about this she puts a post on Facebook (since been removed)

The Response

Needless to say, her post went viral and she received tons of comments with one at least from a server at IHOP that had witnessed the entire event. Expressing shame at the manager’s actions. Another post was one from the manager herself apologizing once again.

William was old enough to realize what had taken place.

The following day William no longer wanted to sit on a table but instead wanted to sit in a chair. He may be a boy with no arms, but he is a boy with a lot of spunk and soon went back to sitting on the table so he can feed himself.

This Is A Big Deal

For those who think this isn’t a big deal, William’s Mom states that she is his Mother and his advocate and she will not have her kid treated that way.

IHOP Thinks It’s a Big Deal Too

The head office of IHOP did not take this lightly and committed to focusing on better educating employees in regards to sensitive matter such as this.

An Opposite IHOP Story

A story such as Williams can leave a very negative impact on a brand like IHOP and also on its servers. But this story has the opposite effect.

Joe has been a server at IHOP for over a decade and has regular customers.

One of his customers has a disability that makes it difficult for her to feed herself. So her husband usually has to interrupt his meal to assist his wife. But Joe wanted them both to be able to enjoy their meal. So he assisted feeding the wife so they could both enjoy their meal together.

When the photo of Joe assisting the customer went viral, he gets an amazing job offer.

Two important lessons about how to not treat and to treat people with disabilities
