Deciding if a person should continue to live or not shouldn’t be shouldered by anyone.
But sometimes this is an unfortunate reality for some. Seeing our loved ones hooked up on life support while all you can do is hope might be one of the things we dread the most.
And when the moment comes, sometimes we will be asked to continue the fight for them or not. This decision can tear even the strongest person apart. However, for this couple, a miracle happened at the moment they least expected.
Ryan Finley found his wife Jill unresponsive.
He tried to wake her up but found out that she was not breathing. In a desperate attempt to save his wife, Ryan dug deep into himself to retrieve what he learned about CPR 10 years before the incident.
The paramedics succeeded in shocking her back to life but the fight was just beginning. They rushed her to the Oklahoma Heart Hospital and placed Jill in a suit that lowered her temperature to minimize the damage to her oxygen-starved brain.
While she was breathing and her heart was beating, Jill sunk into a coma. Ryan had no choice but to wait and hope for the best.
For days, Ryan stayed beside his wife.
He read bible passages to her and on some days, would just lie down next to her. Hours became days, and days became weeks – Jill’s condition remained unchanged.
Doctors also had said there was only a 1-2% chance for someone like Jill to return to a normal life. Ryan didn’t want to think of it but he knows he was about to make the toughest decision of his life.
He shared how the decision tore him apart in his diary.
“Today could be the worst day of my life. I essentially have to decide whether or not she will die or not.” He wrote, according to TODAY. He contemplated that his wife wouldn’t want to live like this so he made the call.
The doctors pulled the plug after their family said their goodbyes. Jill didn’t pass away immediately, which they said was normal.
By 11:45 PM, Jill became restless.
Ryan didn’t think too much about it at first because people also said that it could happen. They call it the “last rally”. However, everything changed when Jill started mumbling.
She said “get me out of here” and that she wanted to go to Melting Pot or Ted’s – two of her favorite Mexican restaurants. At that moment, Ryan knew it was not a “last rally”. It was Jill saying that she was alive.
She has since undergone rehabilitation and heart surgery.
Jill said that she can’t remember anything during her coma. She also said that she has difficulties with her short-term memory and difficult-to-pronounce words but is otherwise fine.
The couple plans to make most of the miracle and promised to cherish the days they have together.
“We cherish each day, each minute, each hour now,” she said to TODAY. “Not that we didn’t before, it just puts it more in perspective.”
