Have you ever wondered about the courage singers and performers of all kinds must-have? Many people would be scared of speaking of performing in front of just a few people, let alone a huge arena filled with thousands. However, each year, on talent shows like The X Factor UK, countless seemingly regular people, often with no performance experience whatsoever, step up on the stage and show the world what they can do. It can be quite a daunting prospect, as 34-year-old Christopher Maloney found out.

Christopher was visibly shaking as he got up onto the stage, holding a microphone in his trembling hands and looking out over the sea of people waiting to see what he could do.

He’d spent five whole years trying to build up the courage to audition on The X Factor UK. During that time, he’d even written up an entire application and then ripped it apart because he was too frightened to go ahead with it, but the loving support of one woman kept him going.

Christopher’s grandmother means the world to him, and he means the world to her.

She has always shown huge support for his talents and supported him in everything he tried to do, so it was no surprise that she accompanied him all the way for his big audition.

She was standing backstage the whole time, confident that Christopher would show the crowd and the judges what he was capable of.

But would Christopher have the courage to actually start to sing?

For a while, it looked like he might not make it. He was shaking and shivering as the judges tried to calm him down, but as soon as one of the judges started asking about his grandmother, Christopher seemed to lose some of his nerves.

He began to tell the crowd and the judges that the song he’d chosen to sing that day had been played at the funeral of his grandfather and that it had very special significance to his family.

Many members of the audience were touched by Christopher’s story, but others seemed nervous that he might not be able to perform due to his nerves.

Fortunately, with his grandmother standing backstage and cheering him on from the sidelines, Christopher eventually plucked up the courage to start singing.

And as soon as he started to sing, the audience burst into excited applause.

Christopher gave the audience and the judges, as well as all those watching at home, a truly passionate and beautiful rendition of Bette Midler’s ‘The Rose’.

His voice is simply exceptional, and all the nerves he had before simply fade away as he loses himself in the song. Then, when the performance finally ends, the entire audience and the judges jump to their feet to cheer and applaud.

It’s a performance that needs to be seen, and especially heard, to be believed.

And the judges are especially shocked when they learn what some people said to Christopher before his audition. Watch the clip below to find out more.
