Sure, there are plenty of ways to measure great talent. But when Marc Martel brought the award-winning songstress Céline Dion to tears with his performance of “Somebody to Love” – it had to of been the highest honor a musician could receive.
Whether or not you’re a fan of the British rock band Queen, it’s a rendition so chill-worthy it’s gone viral with more than 12 million views on YouTube. Get ready, because watching Dion’s reaction is like icing on the cake.
Martel is a musical artist from Quebec, Canada that’s toured the world with his incredible vocals. One aspect that leaves jaws on the floor is how eerily he sounds like the late Freddie Mercury.
Even Queen’s drummer, Roger Taylor, thinks so too. He told the Daily Record:
“That voice. You listen, close your eyes and you think it’s Freddie. It’s really uncanny.”
Before becoming a viral sensation, Martel was the frontman for a band called Downhere for 13 years. Then in 2011, he decided to enter a contest that ended up catapulting his career to another level.
On top of Martel’s audition taking the internet by storm, it also led him to become the lead singer in the band’s tribute concert tour called, The Queen Extravaganza.
Later, Martel took part in the French-Canadian program called En direct de l’univers, which translates to Live from the universe.
He was there to celebrate fellow-Canadian artist, Céline Dion, by performing a song that was “significant” to her. Martel later pointed out in a Facebook post:
“Céline is not only a Freddie Mercury fan, but by some strange twist of the universe, also a fan of mine.”
The moment Martel stepped onto the stage and began singing “Somebody to Love,” Dion couldn’t help but cry out in shock.
If you never had the chance to witness the talents of Freddie Mercury in person, try going to one of Martel’s concerts and shut your eyes. Although no one will ever quite compare to Mercury – some believe it’s as if he’s been reincarnated.
On top of having a similar voice, Martel also resembles Queen’s late frontman too. The combination of everything caused Dion’s eyes to well up with tears during the performance. She became so emotional in fact, that she had to blot with a tissue and it even appeared that her heart was racing.
Can you imagine getting that type of awestruck reaction from a legendary musician like Céline Dion? Surely Martel was confident about his talents already – but this would have been a dream come true.
Of course, Martel didn’t rock “Somebody to Love” alone. He had an entire stage of instrumentalists and backup vocalists that helped bring it all together.
Dion wasn’t the only person blown away by Martel’s haunting performance. It has more than 175,000 thumbs-ups on YouTube and thousands of comments as well.
