When driving on the highway you’re used to seeing thousands of zooming cars. But you’d never expect to find a baby crawling on the side of the highway! It was just an average Georgia day for Bryant Collins when he was driving his car repair truck on 72 Highway.
Highway Hero
But the whole day took a quick turn when Collins found something that he could never have imagined in a million years.
Collins told 11Alive’s Matt Pearl,
“I had seen something out of the corner of my eye, and I thought it was a baby,” Collins recalled. “I just stopped and, when I got out, there was a baby … almost in the highway.”
Sweetest Soul
A 15-month-old baby was crawling it’s way to the road! The baby Managed to make it through 300 yards of dense woods all the way into Bryant’s arms. Collins was shocked and quickly called 911 and reported this strange incident he stumbled on. While they waited for the emergency response teams, the baby we now know as Emily began crying.
Kind-Hearted Savior
Collins knew exactly how to soothe scared little Emily. Collins explained to 11Alive,
“The baby started crying, so I turned my phone on and let her listen to some gospel music, and she calmed right down.”
Collins does the same exact thing when he’s feeling down and thought it might work. Gospel music is the perfect medicine to soothe suffering. Collins claims that the lord changed his life and he believes that it saved baby Emily.
A Guardian Angel
Collins held Emily for 2 hours as she relaxed in his warm company. Lifesaver Collins speaks in a tone of such peace and grace, but his life wasn’t always so blessed. Prior to working at his auto repair shop, Collins learned from his mistakes after serving 10 years in the Madison County Jail for drug manufacturing.
Learning From His Past
He wasn’t going to let that define him and knew he couldn’t continue his destructive path so he decided to come out as a new and improved Collins. He’s been free and clean for the past five years. Collins explained to 11Alive,
“When I was in prison, I made a very conscientious effort to change, and I did.”
Which he’s exceeded with flying colors! Without Collins being in the right place at the right time, baby Emily might not have been so lucky. Officials even explained what a miracle it was that she was able to crawl that far from home without getting injured.
A Miracle Baby
Collins’ kind-hearted act defines him more than anything in his past. It takes outstanding people like Collins to set an example for others. As for baby Emily, she might not understand that Collins saved her life until she gets a little older. Her father Timothy Pickens was arrested after 15-month-old Emily was found on the side of the highway.
A Legacy Of Change
One thing is for certain, Collins was her guardian angel that day. It’s not every day that you find a baby crawling on the highway.
“It made me feel that I could, you know be in society, and do good. Just as well you could do bad, you could do good” Collins told 11Alive.
