Dreams can come true, and no matter how hard it may seem, we can realize our dreams if we truly believe in them.

A young psychology graduate’s weight problems prevented him from pursuing his dreams

A Brooklyn native, Romar Lyle wanted to be in law enforcement since he was a kid. He worked very hard over the years and had built an impressive resume. Romar graduated in psychology and criminal justice. He also finished masters studies in investigative forensics but never abandoned his childhood dream of becoming a cop.

However, there was a major obstacle in Romar’s way: he was overweight. Weighing 405 pounds, Romar could not hope to meet the physical requirements of the job. Despite that, Romar would not abandon his dream, so he decided to change his lifestyle and hit the gym.

In only two years, Romar lost 183 pounds

A colleague invited him to a CrossFit gym back in 2015 and that was the start of a long and difficult journey towards a healthier body and realizing his long-term dream of joining the police force.

Romar admitted he felt embarrassed at the time he began his workout program but was able to overcome his initial discomfort due to the help and support of the community.

“I started to love it,” Romar told the media. “It wasn’t even about weight loss anymore. I genuinely had fun working out and trying to build a better life.”

The next two years would prove to be a busy and productive period for Romar who pursued his master’s degree while maintaining his workout routine at the CrossFit gym. He dropped more than 100 pounds by 2017. His hard work and dedication had paid out because he was able to enroll in the police academy in the very same year.

That only motivated to work even harder. With his goal in sight, Romar kept losing weight and graduated with the 120th Basic Recruit Class seven months later. He had lost 183 pounds by that time. Romar fulfilled his dream but even more importantly, he demonstrated we can change our lives and get rid of unhealthy habits with hard work and determination.

“If you really want to do something, just set your heart to it. Surround yourself with people who will support you, family and friends, and just remember that as long as you believe in yourself, no one can tell you who you are.”

A proof that dreams can come true

Romar’s success proves that it’s possible to achieve our dreams. In just two years, he had fundamentally changed his lifestyle and showed everyone there’s no obstacle that can’t be defeated if we have to courage, will, and strength to conquer it.
“Don’t quit on yourself. If you really want to do something, just set your heart to it. Surround yourself with people who will support you in those goals. Surround yourself with family and friends and just remember that as long as you believe in yourself no one can tell you who you are”, Romar said.
