If you thought life wasn’t fair before, then welcome to this year.
This roller coaster year has been nothing short of suspense and disappointment at nearly every turn.
As if dealing with a global pandemic wasn’t enough, the adverse effects of climate change constantly loom over our heads while America’s leadership does little to stifle the growing problem.
It’s as if the cosmic authors of this simulation are purposefully pulling the strings for one of the deepest 9th innings in a ball game.
Speaking of climate change and baseball, a story of generosity in San Jose has lifted our hearts and will surely warm yours, no fire necessary.
This year’s Western wildfires, such as the Creek Fire in California have led to immense destruciton throughout the region.
The scorching fires ravaged through more than 4 million acres of land throughout the Golden State and destroyed valuable crops, trees, and countless homes.
The conflagration has become California’s single largest fire in history. The flames extend from Fresno to Madera county – a whopping 290,000 acres! So far, 26 individuals have been hurt and 856 structures destroyed.
The results have been devastating.
In Fresno County, a single gesture of kindness may have been the one thing to inspire hope during these tumultuous times.
Reese, a 9-year old baseball fanatic, suffered an unfortunate tragedy: her 100-card baseball card collection was lost in the blaze.
The Cal Fire Department first heard the story and began spreading the word, asking for donations to replace her lost collection.
But it wasn’t long before Reese’s misfortunes were met with love.
Meet Kevin Ashford.
Out of the beauty of his heart, the San Jose man donated his entire 25,000 card collection to Reese.
“I got to thinking about it and I got to thinking about what I have out here in the garage and I got to thinkin,’You know what? Rather than sell these on Ebay, I’m going to donate them. I’m going to donate them all and put a smile on a little girl’s face.”
The CHP and Cal Fire crew took the stack of cards and delivered it safely to Reese.
Kevin has wondered how much his cards would’ve been worth on Ebay, but he is satisfied knowing that instead he will brighten someone’s day.
He made the right choice. Reese’s joy is priceless.
Collecting baseball cards has been a huge hobby since the early 1980’s when an influx of new collectors flooded the market.
Since then, high value rookie cards have surged as the hot commodity for old players and new.
One of the most sought after rookie cards to date is Mickey Mantle’s 1952 Topps card, while Kevin’s 1951 Bowman set remains one of his most undervalued.
For reference, his Bowman card is bidding for a whopping $11,211.00!
Here’s famous catcher Buster Posey.
Kevin’s donation traces back to an astounding 25 years of treasure hunting for these valuable collectibles!
It’s not an easy thing to give away, but recognizing the tragedy Reese went through shows just how much of a heart Kevin has.
His selfless act has undoubtedly made a huge impact on Reese’s life.
Kevin truly is an inspiration for those with a passion for charitable deeds.
Local officials helped him with the packaging and shipping process.
Anyway, what do you think of Kevin’s incredibly gesture in the face of tragedy? How would you feel in Reese’s position?
She’s definitely been through a lot. Fortunately, there are some amazing people in the world.
