Over the past year, bath bombs have taken the beauty world by storm.
These effervescent delights, crafted by soap and cosmetic companies, have been flying off the shelves, with consumers eagerly awaiting the next release.
These powdery mixtures, when introduced to water, create a fizzy reaction, often releasing vibrant colors, shimmering glitter, and captivating fragrances.
The allure of these bath bombs is so strong that even the most stoic adults find themselves captivated, often sharing their bath bomb experiences on social media platforms like Instagram.
The hashtag #bathart on Instagram further shows the bath bomb craze, showcasing countless mesmerizing images of these fizzy wonders in action.
But while they might seem like a recent fad, bath bombs have been around for some time.
The original concept was the brainchild of Mo Constantine, co-founder of Lush.
Drawing inspiration from the effervescence of Alka Seltzer, she combined baking soda and citric acid to create the very first bath bomb.
For those in the know, baking soda on its own can be harsh on the skin due to its high pH.
However, when combined with water and citric acid, the overall pH of the mixture becomes more skin-friendly.
As the popularity of bath bombs soared, enthusiasts began to think bigger, aiming not just for delightful fragrances and colors but also for world records.
The quest for the world’s largest bath bomb began when Mama Pearson’s Soaporium decided to take on the challenge.
While the Guinness World Records suggested a 45-pound bath bomb for an official record, Mama Pearson’s went above and beyond.
They set a new record with a bath bomb weighing an impressive 198.64 pounds.
The achievement was met with jubilation, with the team expressing their overwhelming joy and satisfaction.
However, this record was short-lived. Just a week later, a YouTube video by Vat19 showcased an even more ambitious project.
The Vat19 team crafted a staggering 2,000-pound bath bomb, dwarfing the previous record set by Mama Pearson’s Soaporium.
But they didn’t stop at just creating this mammoth bath bomb; they proceeded to roll it into a swimming pool, capturing the incredible results on video.
This wasn’t the first time YouTubers had experimented with bath bombs.
Earlier, YouTuber Karina Garcia had garnered attention and 5.7 million views by dropping over a thousand bath bombs into a tub.
However, the Vat19 team took a different approach.
Instead of using multiple bath bombs, they focused on creating one gigantic one.
This colossal bath bomb was crafted using 31 fifty-pound bags of ingredients, including corn starch, citric acid, baking soda, and black dye.
Crafting such a massive bath bomb presented its own set of challenges, especially when it came to molding.
Given the absence of readily available molds for such a large size, the Vat19 crew had to get creative.
They fashioned their mold using epoxy and fiberglass.
As one of the team members explained, they aimed to create two mold halves that, when combined, would unveil their gigantic bath bomb masterpiece.
The video of this incredible feat was uploaded to YouTube and quickly went viral, amassing over 33 million views.
However, amidst the awe and admiration, some viewers expressed concerns about the aftermath, particularly regarding the pool’s filtration system.
Comments ranged from light-hearted jests like “How to destroy a pool filter 101” to genuine inquiries about the cleanup process.
For those inspired by these bath bomb escapades and wishing to create their own (albeit smaller) versions, the process is relatively straightforward.
All that’s needed are the right ingredients and a mold.
There are numerous recipes available online, ensuring that everyone can partake in the fizzy fun of bath bombs.
