Those beauty influencers on YouTube have it all wrong!

If you have heavy, hooded, or down-turned eyes, the traditional method of applying eyeshadow vertically to your lid, crease, and browbone can make you look tired and worn out.

There’s a better way, and Houston’s KPRC news anchor and “YouTube encourager” Dominique Sachse is here to show you how.

As a 50-something YouTuber who has been in front of the camera almost all of her life, Dominique knows a thing or two about how to apply makeup. With almost 1.5 million followers, she’s the go-to beauty influencer for women with more mature skin.

If you want your eyes to look open and lifted, then “technique and color placement makes a huge difference in how your eye appears.”

Keep reading to find out more about her top eye makeup tips!

Stop over-tweezing your brows!

Although today’s millennial beauty mavens love the thick, caterpillar-eyebrow look, you may be from the camp that likes a thinner brow line.

The problem is that it exposes more browbone, which when combined with a heavier lid means “you have more coming forward and less receding.”

The solution is to gently fill in your brows and shape them in a way that enhances your overall eye look. When you color in your brows, don’t follow the curve all the way down. Instead, create a very subtle lift at the corner.

Always start with an eye primer.

If you learned how to apply makeup as a teen in the 70s, 80s, or 90s, eyelid primer was not a thing, so you probably never got into the habit of using it. But as Dominique explains, it’s an important component in any eye makeup routine.

“Our eyelids create oil, and that oil allows makeup to sink southward. Primer is a must especially for making eye makeup adhere.”

Pretty much every brand, from drugstore to high-end department store brands, has its own version of eyelid primer. Start using one now!

Create a “receding” look for extra lift.

If you’re used to applying a lighter shade of shadow to your eyelids and a darker shade in your crease, stop! If you have heavy lids, it’ll just amplify the heavy look you’re trying to avoid.

Instead, you’ll want to go darker on your lids to create an open look, which is the exact opposite of what we’ve been taught.

Create a new crease line.

Instead of following the folds of your old crease line, which can drag your eyes downward, you’ll want to create the illusion of a new one.

Here you’ll want to use a darker eyeshadow to carve in that new crease that’s slightly above your natural one.

Use a highlighter for extra lift.

Don’t forget to highlight the outer third of your browbone with a very light shimmery shade. You can use eyeshadow or sticks for this.

Another way to make your eyes pop even more is to apply a tiny bit of highlighter to the inner corner of your eyes.

Blend, blend, blend!

Blending is key to bringing any eye makeup look together. And as you can see in the final look, Dominique’s normally heavy eyelid now looks completely open and lifted!
