There are so many new things to learn and unlearn once we reach the age of 50.
We experience a lot of physical changes. That’s why the routines we had when we were younger are no longer applicable because our features can change somewhat with extra lines and wrinkles.
What you can get away with not doing when you were younger will no longer work for mature women.
Mistake #1: Not exfoliating
For a smooth, natural look, you really need to have a great base. That means you need to have skin that’s free from impurities, and dead skin cells. Exfoliating is the way to go. Get an exfoliating scrub and place it where your shampoo and conditioner are in the shower. So you don’t forget, you can always schedule certain days for exfoliating. You can exfoliate every Monday and Friday or Tuesday and Friday, it’s up to you.

Mistake #2: Heavy foundation
There is no need to wear a heavy foundation that makes you look like a painting. All you need to do is dab a pea-sized amount on your cheeks, chin, nose, and forehead. Use a foundation brush to blend them seamlessly.
You need the foundation to cover up the redness and even out your skin tone, not to transform your face into another skin tone. Dab and blend. That’s it.
Mistake #3: Too much concealer
It’s important to use the right color of concealer that matches your skin tone. It can look like you have too much concealer and that doesn’t look natural anymore, does it?
Like foundation, just dab, and blend. You can create a big triangle anymore with concealer because it’ll expose the fine lines and wrinkles under and around the eyes. And always blend outward.
Mistake #4: Applying blush on the apples of the cheek
When we were younger, we were taught to apply blush on the apples of the cheeks. That works when we were younger. But as we age, unfortunately, the skin on our cheeks begins to sag. And when you apply blush on the apples, the placement of the blush looks unnatural.
It’s better to apply it on top of the cheeks going upward to the corner of the eye and just by the eyebrow. This trick will slim down your face and lift it at the same time.
Mistake #5: Not grooming eyebrows
Sometimes, women are too busy to do their makeup or don’t know too much about applying makeup. Experts will say, as long as you come out with great-looking eyebrows and lipstick, you’re good to go.
Besides trimming your eyebrow hair to give it shape, give it some color and brush it so it’s perfectly groomed.
Mistake #6: Black eyeliner
If you loved black eyeliner when you were younger, it may be time to let it go once you reach 50. Black eyeliner gives off a harsher look and it doesn’t look as good with drooping or hooded eyes anymore.
You can use brown or navy eyeliner instead.
Mistake #7: Wearing dark matte lipstick
When we got older, our lips get thinner. Wearing dark matte lipstick makes it look thinner and makes fine lines on your lips more obvious. How do you make your lips look fuller? Apply lipliner and top it off with hydrating glossy lipstick.
ou can also just use the lipliner and apply lipgloss on top to moisturize and add volume to your lips.
Mistake #8: Not moisturizing the eye area
Mature women need to know one thing, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Always moisturize your skin before adding anything else.
Before you add makeup to your eyes, add moisturizer first. This will brighten your eye area and highlight your eye color.
Mistake #9: Forgetting to prime eyelids
After moisturizing your eye area, apply primer. This will provide a smoother base for your makeup and will prevent it from sliding down your eyes.
It will also even out any discoloration around your eye and brighten your eye makeup at the same time.
Mistake #10: Not concealing dark circles under the eye
Always apply concealer under your eye to even out the color, especially if you have dark circles. You can use your finger to dab and blend but always blend outward and upward.
You can use your ring finger to pat and blend because it’s the weakest finger. But if you’re more comfortable using your other fingers, remember to pat lightly.
Mistake #11: The waterline
Applying eyeliner on the eyelid isn’t exactly a big mistake but eyelids get smaller and droopier as a woman ages. Applying eyeliner on the lids makes them look thicker than it actually is and gives a bolder, harsher look. You can apply brown or navy eyeliner on the upper waterline instead.
This will keep the eyeliner present but thinner. For the bottom waterline, use a lighter color or maybe nude eyeliner. This will brighten up your eyes.
Mistake #12: Putting mascara on the bottom lashes
Mascara on the bottom lashes for mature women is not a very good idea. It makes the eyes look smaller and highlights wrinkles under the eyes as well. If you really want to add makeup to the bottom of your eyes, use dark eyeshadow and smudge it under the lashes and just below the waterline.
Apply to only about 2/3 of the eye to keep the eye from looking too small.
Mistake #13: Forgetting to clean up under the eye area
Cleaning up under the eye with concealer will lift the eyes up. Use a concealer that’s a different color from the one you used earlier. Dab a little under the outer corner. Using a dry sponge, dab the concealer upwards to lift the eyes up.
It’s important to always apply makeup outwards and upwards to lift the sagging skin on the face. And always use a little at first. It’s easy to remedy little makeup than to have to correct overdone makeup without removing everything.
