Rihanna’s 2016 hit single, “Love on the Brain” has been considered by many as a landmark performance that only Rihanna could deliver. With hard-hitting lyrics and a successful blending of classic and contemporary pop sensibilities, it’s hard to imagine anyone but a big name star nailing this moving song. But one YouTube video from Maenzie Thomas’ Covers is here with an excellent cover.
She’s got talent
The video opens as we peer into a woman’s bedroom. The singer, Kenzie, is facing the camera and you can tell she’s ready for something special. She has gorgeous make-up on, her hair is styled and on point, and she offers the warmest smile to the viewers.
As the music cues up, Kenzie takes in a breath. She’s nervous and is about to tackle one of the biggest pop songs of 2016, and arguably one of the biggest songs from the past few years. there have been many covers before hers, so it’s anyone’s guess how hers will sound.
Then she sings the opening lyrics of the song and it’s absolutely incredible. She hits the high notes, sticks to the melody, and delivers a heart melting performance that has been seen and loved across the Internet.
Every time she reaches the chorus, you can see the passion in her expression as she shuts her eyes and lets the music move through her. When she looks into the camera, you can almost feel that she’s singing this song to you, sharing the pain and warmth of Rihanna’s own experiences with the song’s difficult subject matter.
The anxiety and trepidation we saw earlier is gone now. All that remains is pure 100% star power as Kenzie absolutely nails the song. The video has gained over 200k likes with many fans sharing their love for Kenzie’s voice. Some even compare it favorably to Rihanna’s version.
She’s got variety
Makenzie Thomas, perhaps better known as Kenzie through her YouTube channel, is a gorgeous and talented woman. She performs covers of popular songs showing a talent at capturing the emotions and lyrical range of the original artists while adding her own spin to it.
Her channel is part of a popular YouTube trend of artists and musicians performing covers of their favorite songs. These performers stand by artists who add lyrics to lyricless music to showcase the talent that brims beneath the surface of Youtube if you know where to look.
Kenzie has performed songs that you might not even expect, like Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t she Lovely”. Kenzie’s humility and appreciation has won her fans almost as quickly as her incredible talents behind a mic.
But she isn’t just a YouTube sensation. She recently posted a video that shows her performance at the Let’s Kick Cancer benefit concert this past November, 2019. Some of her fans have said that she has healing powers in her voice, while many just love the work she’s done.
But one thing’s for sure, if her video on Rihanna’s “Love on the Brain” has anything to say, it’s that Kenzie doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone. She really is that incredible and it’s heartwarming to see.
