There are few things as traumatic and stressful as losing a loved one.
In fact, losing a spouse may be the single most stressful event that an adult can experience. Still, being a child and losing a parent is just as painful and both of the above can take years to begin to recover from. Still, while our loved ones always live on in our memory, we may also find surprising reminders of them in the world around us.
That’s what happened to one family in February 2016.
A man named Mason had passed away as a result of a ruptured artery at the age of 51.
Mason was a husband, a father and a talented carpenter as well. Before his passing, his wife had asked him to make a small workbench for her to use while she worked on metal engraving, a hobby of hers. He was up to the challenge and completed the desk without any difficulty.
He did, however, leave a special surprise for his wife under the bench.
Though he didn’t know when she would find it, underneath the bench he wrote her a love note in red.
Though it can hard to make out, the message read:
“I love you Becca :) Whatever day this is, I hope it’s a good one. God truly answered my prayers the day he gave me you. I know that these days are the best I’ll ever have, I’m glad you’re in them.
I’m not sure if you’ll ever see this, but if you do, just know that I love you very much. If there is one thing I want in life, it is to be as good to you as you are to me. If I can do that, I’ll be the happiest man alive.
I love you beautiful wife :) – Mason”
As it turned out, it wasn’t his wife who initially found it—it was his step-son.
Although the two were not biologically related, Mason’s son said that the relationship they had was as strong as any father/son relationship. He shared the image of the workbench online under the username ButAnywayHeresWonderwall on Imgur, in a post that has since been deleted. Seeing how moved the commenters were, he wrote:
“Thanks for the love guys. You don’t have to send me anything. I only ask that you love one another so there can be peace. Leave the world better than you found it.”
Above all, this story is a reminder to cherish those we love while we’re all still here on Earth.
Mason’s simple gesture of love to his wife was meant to be a passing amusement when his family was having a boring day. Instead, it turned into much more than that. By finding it after he had gone, his family was given a new and permanent reminder that Mason had loved them so dearly.
