We may consider that rhythmic gymnastics is dancing, but in actuality, it is more than just dancing. It is a sport, and it is definitely not an easy one.
It is a combination of gymnastics, calisthenics and dance and usually involves the use of a prop, which may be a wheel, a hoop, batons, ribbon or rope. It requires a person to be flexible and strong like a gymnast and graceful like a dancer.
It is a precise kind of sport that originate in France, out of the ideas of renowned French dancers of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), François Delsarte (1811–1871), and Rudolf Bode (1881–1970) who all believe that movement is another way to express one’s self. The art has grown over the 1800’s as influences from Finland, Switzerland and France were incorporated in the dance.
Competitions for rhythmic gymnastics began in the 1940’s. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) recognizes the first “modern gymnastics” to have taken place in 1961. Later on, this became “rhythmic sportive gymnastics” and ultimately “rhythmic gymnastics”.
