Meet Christian McPhilamy, a kind, compassionate and strong willed (now) 13 year- old with a passion for helping others. When he was just six he saw a commercial for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital that sparked something in him to want to help kids in need. St. Jude’s is an organization that helps children and families fighting the battle with cancer and other life threatening illnesses.
The commercial that impacted him the most featured children who had lost their hair due to their cancer treatments. When Christian saw this commercial he wanted to do something to help these families, just like St. Jude was.
After being inspired , he did a little online research and found charities that provided wigs for children with hair loss. His mother, Deeanna, helped explain to him that people will grow their hair out to a certain length, and then donate it to these charities that make wigs. The charities then do their best to provide the wigs to patients at little to no cost to them, just so they can live as normal life as possible after treatment. The idea stuck with Christian so for the next 2.5 years he committed to growing out his blonde locks to donate it.
As his hair grew so did the attention he was getting. Most of his friends, family, and teachers were very supportive with his decision- but there were some that weren’t. There were some students and peers that called him a girl, and a few adults that mistook him for one, making poor Christian feel “not very good” about himself. But Christian was a strong willed six-year old and didn’t let the negative comments distract him from his end goal. He knew that what he was doing was much more important than what people thought of him.
And his holding out was all worth it in May of 2015 when his hair reached the 12 inch length requirement for donations. With a little help from mom and dad he sectioned it off into 4 long ponytails and snipped them right off!
Christian then carefully packaged them and mailed his ponytails off to the charity called Children With Hair Loss. This particular hair loss charity is based in Michigan and gives kids ages 2-21 with a documented medical condition a free hair piece. Thanks to donation’s like Christian’s this charity continues to thrive from donations from people with big hearts that want to make a difference, just like Christian. These day’s Christian rocks a short buzz cut, but theres always a chance that in the future he donates again. His mom wrote on Facebook “I’m so very proud of my son. He has done a beautiful thing. he amazes me everyday with the little to the big.”
