Every parent’s worst nightmare is that something will happen to his or her child. There is no way to protect our little ones from all the dangers that life has to offer, but we can certainly prevent a bad situation from becoming even worse. One woman has genius advice for any parents out there who want to do the most they can to protect their children.
When it comes to riding in a car, small children need car seats. That seems like a given, but it doesn’t solve every problem. One mom who works as an EMT has come across the same problem time and again.
The child is safe in the back seat, and the parents are driving. Suddenly, the car gets into an accident and the parents are knocked unconscious. The child is too small to provide EMS with vital information like name, birthday, and medical history, and the parents are unable to speak with the responders.
This is a scene straight out of a nightmare, but it happens all too often. Fortunately, there is something simple you can do to prevent your child from encountering a problem such as this. Kaitlyn Lawson, an EMT with the Frankton Ambulance Service in Anderson, Indiana, has shared the perfect solution on Facebook.
“Way too often firefighters come upon a car wreck with child(ren) in the car who are too young to have any info and parents are unconscious,” Kaitlyn says. “It takes 2 minutes of your time to write out child’s name, DOB, parents names, DOB, emergency contacts and any medical conditions, any meds your child is on and even child’s doctor, then stick it to the child’s car seat.”
She even posted a picture of her own child’s information filled out on a small card and stuck on the car seat. The advice has been shared hundreds of times by cautious parents everywhere.
Many parents who see this message can’t believe they never thought of it sooner. It seems so intuitive to want to provide the best protection for our children, and preventing this kind of confusion in the case of an emergency is definitely the best route. Still, the action is one that many families have never thought of.
Mother Alexis Copas saw the advice and immediately hopped on the band wagon. “As soon as I read this, I made one to stick onto my child’s car seat,” she mentioned on Twitter.
“If just a piece of paper with a little information on it could possibly save his life some day, it was worth the couple minutes to write out.”
Alexis’ sentiment is shared by many parents all over the world. If you haven’t made a similar identification card for your child, now is the perfect time to do so. It is always better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to the safety of our children.
