When young singer Chelsea Fontenel appeared on The Voice Kids Germany, judges instantly knew they had to have her on their team. The song that Chelsea elected to sing was Alicia Keys hit “On Fire” and it ended up being the perfect choice.
Within seconds of beginning her performance, both Lena-Meyer Landrut and Tim Bendzko hit their buttons.
They heard Chelsea’s vocals and couldn’t resist flipping their chairs around to see the face behind the marvelous voice, and when they did, they were totally shocked. The judges couldn’t believe that such powerful vocals were coming out of such a tiny girl, but that is exactly what happened.
Chelsea was only six years old at the time, yet she had a presence on the stage like that was exactly where she belonged.
Not even a minute went by before judge Henning Wehland decided to flip around his chair and have a look too.
He glanced at the other judges, shrugged his shoulders, and slammed on his button right as Chelsea arrived at the chorus of the track.
“This girl is on fire,” Chelsea belted out during the chorus, and she truly was.
Everyone was blown away.
Chelsea was such a strong performer that by the end of the performance, all three of the judges were literally brought to tears.
At such a young age, the control she has over her voice is nothing short of incredible.
In fact, at the time of her performance, Chelsea was the youngest singer to ever appear on the German version of the show. Yet, she performed just as good or better than all of the older kids, as well as many of the grownups from the original series — The Voice.
Even fans have raving compliments about her with the top YouTube comment saying:
The next Beyonce.
2400 people hit the “like” button in agreement. And for good reason, this young lady packs a powerful voice filled with conviction.
While ultimately, Chelsea did not go on to win that year’s edition of the kids singing talent competition, she did make it through several rounds of elimination.
We’d say, all in all, that is pretty awesome for a six-year-old.
We imagine she has quite the career ahead of her, or at the very least, she has plenty of time to keep on working on her voice and developing her singing talent.
A recent search on her name brings up a surprising twist to the story though.
Chelsea is now actually an up-and-coming tennis star as well! While tennis has since become her primary focus, she hasn’t totally forgotten about her singing career yet either.
“Without ever having attended singing lessons, singing is my second great passion, in which I can freely express my feelings. If I can make people happy while listening, then I’m twice as happy,” the bio on her website reads.
Her end goal is to forge a career that is a little bit of a mix of both disciplines.
“With all my heart I want to become the first singing tennis champion and train for it daily.”
It is so interesting to see how young people’s talents and passions evolve over time, and we are so excited to see what life has in store for Chelsea as she continues to get older.
