Our surroundings and the people around us often help us define what is good and valuable.

When a little boy posed the question about the value of life to his father, the man decided to give him a task that would teach him an important lesson. The boy was told to ask three different people to judge the value of a stone.

And the little boy realized that depending on the situation he put himself in, each person answered the question in a different way. Most undervalued the object. But when he came across someone who understood its true worth, he was shocked at its value.

In the end, the little boy ended up learning an important lesson about surrounding himself with people who could see things at their finest and value them fairly.

One day, a little boy asked his father, “What is the value of life?”

Instead of replying with a direct answer, the father handed his son a shiny, beautiful rock and told him to sell it at the market.

When someone asks you for the price of the rock, simply raise two fingers and don’t say a word.

The boy went to the market and a woman approached him about the rock – she wanted to put it in her garden.

True to his father’s instructions, the boy raised his two fingers and said nothing.

The woman said “$2? I’ll take it!”

Later, the boy returned to his father and said he was offered two dollars for the stone.

The father then told his son to take the shiny rock to a museum. If someone were to ask him the price, simply hold up two fingers and don’t say a word.

So the little boy went to the museum to show his rock to the museum curator.

She asked how much it cost, and he held up two fingers, not saying a word. “$200?” the curator responded. “I’ll take it!”

Shocked, the little boy ran home to his father to tell him about the $200 offer.

The father looked at his son and said “Son, the last place I want you to take this rock is the precious stone and gem store. Show it to the owner, and when she asks the price, simply hold up two fingers and don’t say a word.”

The little boy quickly made his way to the precious stone store.

Showing the rock to the owner, she exclaimed, “Where did you find this gorgeous, rare stone? I must have it! How much are you selling it for?”

The little boy held up two fingers and the woman said “Deal! I will buy it for $200,000!”

Stunned once again, the boy ran home and told his father about the new, unbelievable offer.

“Son, do you see and know the value of life now?” the father said.

You see – it doesn’t matter where you were born, the color of your skin, or how much money you have. What matters is where you decide to place yourself, how you carry yourself, and who you choose to surround yourself with.

In the story above, the little boy was ambiguous about what he was willing to accept in exchange for the stone.

By doing so, he learned that it’s important to surround yourself with those who know your true value – because only then will you receive the treatment you’re worth.
