In this day in age, we are generally very safe. We have laws and rules put into place to help protect us and our loved ones. But in reality? Accidents happen. The best way to protect yourself in an accident is being prepared as much as possible.
Keep you and your loved ones safe and prepared by learning these simple life hacks that could potentially save your life.
1.) Make eye contact often and move with intention
When someone seems threatening, intimidating, or “scary” it might feel natural to put your head down and move quickly. It’s instinct. The problem is — this reaction could cause you to look like prey.
Instead — slow down, make eye contact, and move on with confidence. This keeps you from looking like an easy target and could make the potential threat think twice.
2.) Be smart if you need to escape from a sinking car
It is easy to lose your cool if you are trapped in a sinking car – you may try to open the door and will expend excess energy doing so. You will be unable to open the door because of the water pressure. You will only be able to open the door once the car is filled with water and the pressure equalizes. If you wait this long, it may be too late. Instead, roll down or break the window.
It is advisable to keep a window breaking device in your car for these types of emergencies. If you do not have one, you can use a different heavy object.
3.) Money, keys and a charged phone
Anytime you leave you go on any sort of outing, these 3 things should be on your checklist. These 3 items could potentially save your life or someone else’s.
You should always have a working and charged phone in case of emergency or calling for help for someone else. Having access to money could also prevent headaches if you needed to call for a tow truck or need a place to stay.
4.) 3-Exit rule
No matter where you are — the shopping mall, a sporting event, or even a restaurant — you should always make yourself aware of the exits around you in case of an emergency. If something were to happen, knowing where the exits are could mean life or death.
Be aware of doors, fire escapes, and large windows that could be an easy way out if needed.
5.) Say “sorry” if you bump into someone
Not only is this just common courtesy but apologizing after bumping into someone could prevent an escalation. You never know who that person is or what kind of day they might be having.
Someone might be carrying a weapon, they could be mentally unstable, or they could be on drugs. You just never know. A simple apology could go a long way and could mean the difference between going about your day or ending up in a fight.
6.) Count seats to emergency exit on the plane
Just like counting the exits in any place on land — it’s equally important to do so on a plane. Once the emergency exits are made known during the safety announcement, be sure to count how many rows it will take to get to that exit row.
If the plane were to be too smoky or too dark during an evacuation, you could count the number of headrests until you reach your exit. Your pre-planned counting could also assist others.
7.) Learn to hold your breath
No one ever wants to imagine themselves in a situation where they might be trapped underwater or surrounded by toxic fumes. By that same token — it’s never a bad idea to be prepared.
Most people can only hold their breath for 15-30 seconds. Could you imagine being able to hold it for 1, 2 or 3 minutes? That could mean life or death. Practice breathing techniques that can increase your ability to hold your breath for as long as possible.
8.) Strengthen your forearms and wrists
Please SHARE this with your friends and family.
How many times have you watched a movie where a character ends up hanging from a ledge or rope to survive? It might sound unlikely but it’s best to be prepared for any situation.
What if your building was on fire but you were on the 10th floor? You never know how long you might need to evacuate from your window and hold on until rescue arrives. Strengthen your forearm and wrist muscles with a grip trainer or hand crusher.
Being prepared for any and every situation can help save your life and the ones you love. These simple life hacks could make a huge difference in a precarious situation.
