Fame, power, titles, glory, and all the riches in the world cannot stop time and eventually death. Life is unpredictable but that hasnโt stopped the people in this list from contributing to society with careers in politics, music, and the arts.
Itโs always a shock hearing the passing of someone famous but it only serves to remind us that we are all human and that someday, we will leave this life. Check out these last photos of famous people before their passing.
1. Franklin D. Roosevelt, 63, 1882-1945
This photo was taken on April 11th, 1945. Franklin D. Roosevelt passed the next day, April 12th, from a stroke. Heโs one of eight American presidents who passed while in office. His declining physical health was kept secret, away from the public, so his passing sent shock and grief across the nation.
2. George Harrison, 58, 1943-2001
Taken for the booklet of Jools Hollandโs album Small World, Big Band, this photo was released in 2001 when Harrison wrote the song โHorse to the Water,โ featured on the album.In 2001, Harrison was treated for lung cancer, before passing away on Nov. 29th, 2001, in Los Angeles.
3. Abraham Lincoln, 56, 1809-1865
Taken sometime in March, 1865, this was Lincolnโs last photo before he was shot in the head by well-known actor John Wilkes Booth at Fordโs Theatre on April 14th, 1865, in Washington DC. He passed the next day, becoming the first of four Presidents to be assassinated in office.
4. Tupac Shakur, 25, 1971-1996
Tupac Shakur was shot several times in a drive-by shooting after this photo was taken in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 7, 1996. Shakur passed six days later in the hospital. Shakurโs rival, The Notorious B.I.G., was accused of the crime but allegations were never proven.
5. Robert F. Kennedy, 42, 1925-1968
This was the last photo of Robert Kennedy taken moments after being shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles by Sirhan Sirhan on June 5, 1968. The senator passed early the next morning. Sirhan said, โI can explain it. I did it for my country.โ His support for Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War was his motivation to assassinate Kennedy.
6. Prince, 57, 1958-2016
Here is Prince outside a Walgreens pharmacy near his Minnesota home. He spent his final hours alone, before being found unconscious in an elevator 13 hours after he was last seen. Prince passed from an accidental overdose of Fentanyl.
7. Elvis Presley, 42, 1935-1977
This photo of Elvis was shot at Graceland in the early hours of August 16th, 1977. The singer had come from the dentist and later in the day had a heart attack, dying in his bathroom due to complications of drug use. Elvis had a weak heart and a range of health issues thanks to his lifestyle.
8. Diana, Princess Of Wales, 36, 1961-1997
Diana, Princess of Wales, passed from her injuries in a car crash on 31st August 1997. The Mercedes crashed in the Pont de lโAlma tunnel in Paris. This photo shows Diana and her companions leaving the Ritz in Paris at around 12:20 a.m. as they were being pursued by the paparazzi. Seconds after this picture was taken, the driver lost control in the tunnel and crashed into a pillar. Diana passed later that morning in the hospital.
9. Jim Morrison, 27, 1943-1971
This photo was taken on June 28th, 1971. Morrison and his girlfriend Pamela Courson were all smiles but on the 3rd of July, Morrison passed of a heart failure in Paris. Morrison is buried in Pรจre Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. His tomb is one of the cityโs most visited tourist attractions.
10. Lucille Ball, 77, 1911-1989
Here is Lucille Ball at the Academy Awards on March 29th, 1989. Ball suffered an aortic rupture on April 26th, 1989, dying in her LA home.
11. John Candy, 43, 1950-1994
This is John Candy on the set of the film โWagons East.โ Candy suffered a heart attack in his hotel room in Mexico on March 4th, 1994 while the film was still in production. He had been struggling with weight-related health issues for years.
12. Amelia Earhart, 39, 1897-1937 (1939)
Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, took a quick photo before attempting to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe. The plane disappeared on July 2nd, 1937 over the Pacific Ocean in unknown and unresolved circumstances. The mystery of her disappearance led to many claims and conspiracy theories regarding her final flight.
13. Kurt Cobain, 27, 1967 โ 1994
This Nirvana photo shoot took place five months before Cobain passed. The songwriter was 27 when he took his own life.
14. Paul Walker, 40, 1973-2013
Fast and the Furious actor Paul Walker was leaving a charity event in a red Porsche Carrera GT driven by Roger Rodas, which would later crash into a concrete lamp post, killing both men in the ensuing fire. Investigators concluded that the car was running between 80 mph (130 km/h) and 93 mph (150 km/h) on old tires.
15. Candy Darling, 29, 1944 โ 1974
Candy Darling passed of lymphoma on March 21, 1974 with this photo of her taken a few moments before her final breath. In a letter intended for Andy Warhol and his followers, Darling said, โUnfortunately before my passing I had no desire left for life โฆ I am just so bored by everything. You might say bored to death. Did you know I couldnโt last. I always knew it. I wish I could meet you all again.โ
The transgender actress was famous in Andy Warholโs films. She was also a muse for the band โVelvet Underground.โ
16. Bob Marley, 36, 1945-1981
Here is Bob Marley in Munich, Germany, just months before illness took his life on May 11th, 1981. He weighed just 35 kilograms in this photo. Marley had a dark pigment melanoma under his toe which spread throughout his body.
17. Leonard Cohen, 82, 1934 โ 2016
Leonard Cohen launched his final album โYou Want It Darkerโ on Oct 13th, 2016 in L.A. He passed in his sleep on November 7th following a fall on that same night.
18. Michael Jackson, 50, 1958-2009
Micheal Jackson spent a lot of time in rehearsals for upcoming sold out shows. The artist went into cardiac arrest in his LA home on June 25, 2009.
Jackson had scheduled a series of comeback concerts to over one million people at Londonโs O2 Arena which was to take place on July 2009 to March 2010.
19. John F. Kennedy, 46, 1917-1963
This photo was taken just before Kennedyโs assassination on November 22, 1963. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the assassination, which he denied. Oswaldโs case led to many conspiracy theories that still exist to this day.
20. Amy Winehouse, 27, 1983-2011
Amy Winehouse takes a leisurely stroll in London on July 12th, 2011. She passed on July 23, 2011. Her blood alcohol content was more than five times the legal drink-drive limit.
Her brother, Alex Winehouse, revealed Amyโs battles with eating disorders. โShe suffered from bulimia very badly. Thatโs not, like, a revelation โ you knew just by looking at herโฆ She would have passed eventually, the way she was going, but what really ended it for her was the bulimiaโฆ I think that it left her weaker and more susceptible. Had she not had an eating disorder, she would have been physically stronger.โ
21. James Dean, 24, 1931-1955
James Dean was a passionate driver who loved racing cars. On September, 30, 1955, he crashed the Porsche in this photo, swerving to avoid an oncoming car. This came after Dean introduced himself to British actor Alec Guinness in Hollywood. Guinness looked at the car and said it looked โsinisterโ.
Guinness told Dean: โIf you get in that car, you will be found dead in it by this time next week.โ This exchange happened on September 23, 1955, just seven days before Deanโs fatal crash.
22. Marilyn Monroe, 36, 1926-1962
Marilyn Monroe having some fun with jazz pianist Buddy Greco in August 1962, a few days before her passing. She was found in her LA home by her psychiatrist. Monroe experienced various mental health problems including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and chronic insomnia for years.
23. Benazir Bhutto, 54, 1953-2007
Benazir Bhutto waves to the crowds by standing out of her bulletproof car on December 27, 2007 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. A man fired three gunshots at her when the car went passed before detonating a vest packed with ball bearings.
24. Steve Jobs, 56, 1955 โ 2011
One of the last photos of Steve Jobs before his passing in October 5th, 2011 was taken at his home in California. He passed from a relapse of his previously treated illness. His family was at his side with his final words said to be, โoh wow, oh wow, oh wow.โ
25. Anne Frank, 15, 1929-1945
This was one of Anne Frankโs last images of her alive which was taken in 1942. She passed in March 1945 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp when she and her family were discovered and arrested on August 4th, 1944. This is Anne with her sister, Margot.
26. Muhammad Ali, 74, 1942-2016
Taken on May 22, 2016, Muhammad Ali and his daughter Hana have a little chat over the phone before he was hospitalized on June 2, 2016 with a respiratory illness. His condition worsened, and Ali passed the following day at 74 from septic shock. Ali suffered from Parkinsonโs disease since 1984, but he did remain active in civic and political causes throughout his life.
27. Heath Ledger, 28, 1979-2008
This is a photo of Ledger from his last film โThe Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.โ Just a few days later, Ledger was found in his New York apartment after an accidental overdose from prescription medication on January 22nd, 2008.
28. Alan Rickman, 69, 1946 โ 2016
Alan Rickman looking happy and healthy in this last photograph before losing his battle. Rickman was diagnosed with terminal cancer of the pancreas in August 2015. He chose to keep it private until his passing on January 14, 2016.
29. Jimi Hendrix, 27, 1942-1970
Jimi Hendrix poses with his favourite guitar โBlack Bettyโ taken on September 17th, 1970. His girlfriend Monika Danneman took this shot in the garden behind her apartment. The next day, Hendrix passed from a barbiturate-related asphyxia. There is no evidence that he took his own life, despite media speculation.
30. David Bowie, 69, 1947-2016
December 7th, 2015 was David Bowieโs last public appearance. This was at the premiere of his musical, โLazarusโ, at the Theatre Workshop in New York. Bowie had been battling liver cancer. His final album, โBlackstarโ, was full of references to death where he had accepted and come to terms with his own mortality.
31. Nikola Tesla, 86, 1856 โ 1943
Nicola Tesla passed alone on January 7, 1943 in the New Yorker Hotel. Tesla was penniless by the end of his life. He became a vegetarian living on only milk, bread, honey, and vegetable juices. He spent days in a park surrounded by pigeons, while his sleepless nights were spent with many mathematical equations and scientific problems in his head.
32. Carrie Fisher, 60, 1956-2016
Carrie Fisher poses in a photo taken by a fan in London the same day she boarded a flight to Los Angeles. She suffered a heart attack and passed away in a hospital four days later shocking the entire world with her sudden demise.
33. Robin Williams, 63, 1951-2014
Robin Williams has a moment with his monkey, Crystal, on Instagram for his birthday, 20 days before he passed. Williams was misdiagnosed with Parkinsonโs Disease but he suffered from a type of dementia which led to severe paranoia days before his passing. Williams left the world at the age of 63.
34. Chester Bennington, 41, 1976-2017
A smiling and happy Chester Bennington just days before his passing. On July 20, 2017, Bennington was found at his California home. He took his own life by hanging. Bennington always spoke about his struggles with addiction and depression, but this shocked even his closest friends.
The day after singer Chris Cornellโs memorial, Bennington tweeted saying he was โfeeling very creativeโ.
He had written six new songs, even telling his friend, Rene Mata, โWe have to stick together, and we have so much to live for.โ
Bennington was 41.
35. Freddie Mercury, 45, 1946-1991
This was taken in 1991. Freddie denied rumors about having AIDS, avoiding the media circus to concentrate on his career to the very end. He released this statement the day before his passing:
โFollowing the enormous conjecture in the press over the last two weeks, I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have AIDS. I felt it correct to keep this information private to date to protect the privacy of those around me. However, the time has come now for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth and I hope that everyone will join with me, my doctors and all those worldwide in the fight against this terrible disease. My privacy has always been very special to me and I am famous for my lack of interviews. Please understand this policy will continue.โ
In less than 24 hours, Freddie passed from bronchopneumonia brought about by having AIDS.
